A portrait of “Lead Belly” Ledbetter by Charles White (1918-1979), “Good Night Irene,” 1952, oil on canvas, 47 × 24 inches (119.38 × 60.96 cm), Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO. More info in ALT. #art #arthistory #blackart #blackartist #blackartists #BlackHistory

Gallery label: ‘Performing for an intimate audience of one, Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter plays Goodnight Irene, his signature ballad. While he sings about the emotional toll of unrequited love, his companion closes her eyes and rests her head near his. Although the woman’s face and arms are solidly rendered, there is no evidence of the rest of her body. Is she simply a figment? Is she the elusive Irene conjured by Lead Belly’s longing lyrics: “Goodnight Irene, goodnight Irene, I’ll get you in my dreams?”

Charles Wilbert White created this portrait three years after the legendary musician’s death. He painted Lead Belly in his prime playing a popular late-1800s folk song that he was the first to record in 1933. In addition to celebrating an icon of American music, Goodnight Irene is a key example of White’s socially conscious art. White aimed to affirm the humanity and beauty of African Americans throughout his career. Goodnight Irene highlights the artist’s ability to invest his subjects with steadfast dignity and universal resonance.’

You herd it here first

Jeanne-Louise (Nanine) Vallain, Portrait of a young woman holding a lamb, 1788, Musée Cognacq-Jay #arthistory #puns #WomenArtists

18th century painting of a seated woman holding a lamb. She wears a simple shift with a mauve wrap and is likely and allegory of innocence, gentleness, patience and humility. Caption reads: You herd it here first

Johannes Vermeer left no note explaining who this woman was or what moment he imagined. In 17th-century Delft, an ordinary household task could hold a whole world of private feeling. What story do you sense behind her pause?

What happens when a painting becomes more like music? 🎨🎶

In Nocturne: Blue and Silver – Chelsea, Whistler invites us to experience colour, harmony and atmosphere as much as place.

Look closely. What strikes you first?

The place, the colour — or the mood?

Fury and Feathers 🦢 Jan Asselijn's Threatened Swan (c.1650) looks like a barnyard scuffle, but 17th-century inscriptions added after his death turned it into political allegory for statesman Johan de Witt. First painting acquired by the Rijksmuseum's predecessor, in 1800! 🇳🇱 #ArtHistory #BaroqueArt

Oil painting of a large white mute swan on a riverbank, wings spread wide in an aggressive display, beak open and hissing towards a small dog approaching from the water. Loose white feathers float in the air around it. Nesting eggs sit behind the swan, with reeds and an amber, cloud-streaked sky in the background and a blue sky to the left. Painted by Jan Asselijn, c. 1650.

Boats, Gloucester by Stuart Davis, c. 1917, Philadelphia Museum of Art (Philadelphia, PA)

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #Precisionism

This rare early painting by Stuart Davis was made in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where the artist began spending summers in 1915. Probably painted during his second visit, the work reflects the profound impact that the 1913 Armory Show in New York City had on Davis; the exhibition introduced him to the principles of abstraction being pioneered by artists in France and Germany. Here, the thickly painted white crescents generalize the upturned hulls of fishing boats.
