A clear night and plenty to discover. ✨ We are looking back at when alumni and friends gathered at Melton Observatory for tours and exploration with USC's physics and astronomy experts. #WorldSpaceWeek

#astrophilia #worldspaceweek

Three hearts. Blue blood. Eight arms that taste.

Ainu lore tells of red giant Akkorokamui; in Hawaiʻi, the octopus is a form of Kanaloa. 🌊

A 2018 paper proposed frozen eggs arriving on comets—an unproven idea. ☄️

World Space Week doesn't have to be all about the science.

It's a great time to share Mini Grey's book 'Toys in Space' too, which Busy Things includes an extract of!

Remembering Dr. Janice Voss during #WorldSpaceWeek 🚀 & #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth.

An engineer & astronaut, she served as a mission specialist on 5 Shuttle missions & was Science Director for NASA's Kepler Space Observatory. #WomenInSTEM

She was born #OTD in 1956 & died of #breastcancer in 2012.

A candid, documentary-style photograph of American engineer and NASA astronaut Dr. Janice Voss (1956–2012) operating the controls inside a Space Shuttle flight deck in microgravity. Seated at a slight angle and framed from the torso up, she turns back over her right shoulder to look directly at the camera with a bright, joyful, and radiant smile. Her thick brown hair is floating buoyantly upward and backward away from her face, a clear visual indicator of the zero-gravity environment. She is dressed in a dark navy blue crew flight jacket over a red collared shirt. Her left hand rests lightly on a control console above her, while her right hand works near a grid of gray instrument buttons. She is surrounded by the complex, industrial interior of the shuttle cabin, which is packed with densely arranged instrumentation panels, monitors displaying digital data, toggles, wiring bundles, a mounted camera assembly, and an orange flight suit securely strapped to the bulkhead beside her. The natural, unfiltered cabin lighting casts soft shadows across the scene, evoking a professional, inspiring, and triumphant mood. The composition emphasizes her historic significance as a veteran of five spaceflights and a champion for women in STEM fields.

#WorldSpaceWeek 🔭 How can a dragonfly change how we see space?

USC astrophysicist Mehrnoosh Tahani created DragonflyPol, a telescope tool that reveals details ordinary images miss. See how collaborative research is shaping astronomy.

A group of five individuals is gathered around a telescope tuned to polarized light, with visible technical equipment. The caption reads, "A telescope that sees like a dragonfly." The image is labeled #UofSC and #WorldSpaceWeek. A line mentions "University of South Carolina astronomy professor probes deep space. The image shows a quote from USC astrophysicist Mehrnoosh Tahani. The text discusses the longstanding impact of astronomy and the importance of interdisciplinary collaborations involving mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. At the bottom, it includes the logo of the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences, University of South Carolina. In the background, there is an observatory with open domes against a scenic landscape.

The dynamo process which produces the magnetic fields that shield planets, remains one of the greatest mysteries of modern physics; Alban Pothérat’s project explores whether the magnetic field itself drives the polar vortex where it’s generated.
