The #WIPSnip word of the day is 'month' - Southern Gothic as a genre is nothing else if not a love letter do the deeply complicated beauty of the rolling hills, meandering rivers, and lush green valleys within.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'month' - the following is an excerpt of my novel WIP Canary using the word of the day - For all my pain and anguish, I did love the South. It was beautiful in ways few other people understood. Life was hard, but it was lovely, too. Saving up pocket change for months to afford a weekend camping trip in the hills made it all the more magical. Escaping the heat in the meandering creeks and rivers, the same waterways that had stretched through the mountains for eons, was a spiritual experience. The rich, earthy scent of the clay soil as you dug for mudbugs, the humid nights that sung with the song of wildlife, the whispering voices on the breeze snaking through the corn fields: no matter how I felt about her, the South was my home.

#WipSnip from BEERS OF WAR as one character muses on the nature of the lands beyond the Frontier.

@cjmann3.bsky.socialSep 13, 2026, 4:57 PM

History can make a fine distraction until you realize you’re about to become part of it.

From QUEEN FOR A DAY, a finished dark fantasy novel.

#WIPSnip #AmWriting #DarkFantasy #MythicFantasy

Cobeah walked the stone halls, her grief locked below deck. Each hollow step pressed her closer to losing control, but promises bound her. So she held strong. Ready to retire to the royal chambers for the night, she turned her gaze to the walls at her side and let their welcome distractions take her.

The stone was older than any throne, its first shapes carved not by human hand, but by water’s patience. Settlers had later squared the halls and hewn their mark into what had once been wild, yet the bones of those ancient water-flows remained, if one knew where to look.

Countless monarchs had roamed these halls. Queens, kings, and rulers unbound by gender. Before them all, Chantara had been corsair water, lawless and greedy, until one woman rose from plunder and bent the realm toward order. From her fleet came Pelagica. From Pelagica came empire. The Naiads and Nereids guided her sail and Mother Altalune sanctified her course.

Now Cobeah, in her own turn, threatened to bring it all toppling down. Her foul actions would be written in the same water-hewn stone as the monarchs of old. She had no choice, not that anyone would care. Their belief in her wasn’t necessary. She only needed the crown long enough to finish what Disaya’s death had begun. Long enough to protect her bloodline, her grandchild, and the future of the throne.

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'distract' - escapism is the most affordable form of fun and the best way to bond as friends. Before the drama kicks off, Bekah and Katie spend lots of times as regular friends writing fanfiction together.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'distract' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP using the word of the day - Bekah kept hyping me up, shaking my shoulders with her own excitement throughout the day. I had distracted myself with pouring over the chapter reply I was writing for our story together. It had become apparent quickly that Bekah preferred the kind of fiction that tested boundaries, the kind of stories that would make a teacher gasp. No longer did I wonder why she struggled to find a writing partner. Wrightsville's most alternative was still aghast by the heated teenage cravings for the taboo. Even so, I was happy to indulge her.

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'wedge' - relationships as a teen are messssy and so are the feelings, no better illustrated than the drama told through my MC here.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity

The WIP Snip Word of the Day is 'wedge' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary featuring the word of the day - In a short year we'd become so entangled as friends that we practically went everywhere together. There was no one in the world I was closer to. Our connection was so constant that it had driven several wedges between Bekah and her friends. Yet, she dragged me around by my hair at her leisure whenever she was bored. My texts often went unanswered, but never could I do the same. She itched for attention and, the longer we were friends, the more it felt like Logan could no longer scratch that ache for her.

Checking my phone for a tenth pathetic time, I felt the shame of my own expectation weigh on me. Why was I so hung up on waiting for her? It didn't really matter. She was probably just busy. I was busy. That's what I told myself, anyways.

🟥

Mel wants a bad-ass cybernetic arm, but maybe it's bad to ask someone to remove one of your arms? Who knows?

@autumnreynsford.bsky.social might!

#korps #wipsnip

>> I have a cybernetics expert in the next room to talk to you about what you’re going to be going through. Maybe teach you a bit of tact, if possible.

“Good luck to whoever you’re giving that task to, but send ‘em on in I guess.”

>> Miss Reynsford?

The door slowly opened to the room, a fennec with round glasses poking her head around the door.

“Uh, howdy? Someone was needing a cybernetic expert?” The black and white furred vixen drawled, with a noticeably Southern accent. “I’m usually the flygirl though sooo… what’s up?”

Mel rolled their eyes. “Did you send me a nerd?”

>> Yes, now please button your wedge for a moment. Autumn, would you mind giving our friend here a run-down of upkeep and maintenance? If you have time, too, how to discuss this kind of thing with those members of the Korps who didn’t decide to have work like this done on a whim?

Another #WIPSnip from "Black Sheep."

Sarah made different life choices than the rest of the Millers. Surely, they're every bit as judgmental about hers as she is of theirs.

#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Sarah began to wonder if their Mom and Dad were hiding as the three of them navigated the crowded lobby and conference room, filled with uncles and aunts, both great and not so great. Nieces and nephews, cousins once or twice removed. Three times removed? Was that even possible? She recognized faces but only occasionally names. There were entirely too many Millers. This family loved to breed.

She spotted one of her prettier, second cousins she didn’t know very well and hadn’t seen for at least a decade. Far enough away that she wasn’t obligated to engage and didn’t care to. Hayley. Or was it Kayleigh? Surrounding her, fighting for her attention, were four hyperactive terrors, close enough in age that Hayley/Kayleigh clearly didn’t take much time off between them. It showed. That once athletic body was soft now and her eyes, dark and exhausted.

Sarah had observed these transformations since the first time she’d come back after high school, after three years of living abroad.

The most beautiful and handsome cousins quickly fell apart as they entered adulthood, steamrolled by some combination of adulthood, stress, the workforce, poor diets, no exercise, and having children. Especially the children. They claimed to be so happy to have a family, but for so many, the light behind their eyes seemed to be flickering for life, if not out completely.

Not Hannah. Hannah still glowed as brightly as ever.

‘Exhaust’ —> ‘Exhausting’

From “To Save The Sun
Part II

So for an entire fifth, I spent time collecting wood in the spot, building the base of a massive bonfire on the beach, with advice from Iusta on the best materials to use as kindling; which wood burned best. All of the preparation work was rather exhausting; working in space in a laboratory didn’t give me much opportunity to do heavy lifting or much manual labour, leading to some incredible soreness in places I didn’t know could become sore!

But here we were, five days later, Uruëa asking “why are we on the beach?”
“Look, I’ve been working on something for you these past few days,” the massive pile of wood came into view as we took the curve of the beach.

-“A large pile of driftwood?” He asked quizzically.

“Don’t be like that, Uruëa,” I said, “This took a lot of effort to put together!” I approached the pile with my fire starting kit, given to me by Iusta, and lit the kindling. I stepped back and urged Uruëa to step back too. The small flames began to spread quickly among the rest of the kindling; the tongues of flame licking the wood for several seconds before one branch caught, then another, and then a log, until we were left with a huge blaze. “You wanted a larger source of energy to transmute, and I wanted to give it to you safely. You also have the bonus of being able to practice transmuting something from a distance, since you won’t be getting close to that heat.”

#WIPSnip Exhaust

Her attendants leave, but the blood stains do not. Even alone, Cobeah feels the weight of every Chantaran judgment upon her.

From QUEEN FOR A DAY, a finished mythic fantasy novel soon to serialize Jan 2027.

#BookSky #MythicFantasy #DarkFantasy #AmWriting #IndieAuthor

Attendants added a final armful of logs to the hearth beneath the copper tub before retreating to the edges of the room. They did an admirable job pretending not to notice the tears streaming down Cobeah’s face. She ignored their worried glances as they obeyed her orders to make the water scalding hot. It was hotter than she could bear, but the pain anchored her. It proved she was still alive and that none of this was another hallucination or dream-shiver from exhaustion.

Her diary lay open on the small table near the tub, ink drying where her hand had last shaken across the page. May Mother Altalune judge my soul, for Chantara could only judge the blood upon my hands. She had meant to leave the line behind once written, but it would not leave her. It followed her into the steam, into the heat, into every place where judgment waited.

The attendants drifted out in ones and twos. Only a few remained to help her with her bath. Silence rushed in, heavy as wet cloth, broken only by the hiss of the hearth and the low churn of water as she lowered herself into the tub. The room smelled of steam and lye soap and blood that no scrubbing could lift from stone.

Even after everyone left, there were still far too many people in the room.

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'exhaust' featuring everyone's favorite trope: bedsharing! It's always tricky to tell if someone's just acting out in sleep or if their actions are disguised, especially here in my WIP.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'exhaust' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary featuring the word of the day - In her sleep, Bekah rolled around until she found the source of heat she could leach off of. Just as I thought exhaustion finally put me to bed, I felt her tiny arm squeeze around me and pull close. My heart pounded, eyes popping open wide against the smokey sting and the burning sun kissed tightness against my cheeks. She nuzzled into my back, my stomach and heart fighting for which could make me feel sicker. The snores told me she was dead asleep, but it trapped me in her clutches. Pulse racing, I tried to feel tired again but the sensation of Bekah clawing at my body for purchase kept me awake for another hour.

Meet Deciduous 😈 At least... part of them... 😈

#wipsnip #macaronwip

I gotta get back into doing these!

Evelyn scrunched her eyes shut tightly, taking a deep breath, then opened them wide as she jumped out, raising her fists in front of herself as if she were going to box whatever it was.

Nothing attacked her, and instead of fear, curiosity struck.

From a crack in the ceiling, small objects were falling down. Most of them were landing on the soft carpet, but anytime one landed directly on the growing pile, there was a sharp, tiny, almost ceramic 'plink!' noise.

“What on earth...?” Evelyn mumbled as she looked down at the objects. “Beads of some kind...?”

One of them bounced off the pile to land by her shoe. She reached down and picked it up, turning it in her fingers, then dropped it with a short scream.

It was a human tooth.

“What the—what the fuck!?” she cried, stepping backwards.Deciduous the tooth monster drawn as The Nightmare by Macaron

Not Triple Strike today, since I have a good one for the current wip, Entropic Son~. Derek and Janus' relationship is probably my favorite relationship I've ever written. This is their first meeting.

A sly smile twisted Janus’ lips. “You're a liar.”
The man seemed unimpressed with Janus' victory. He arched an eyebrow. “Oh?”
“No one navigates the sewers without a hacker,” Janus declared. “There are too many locks for plebs to get around. So. You’re lying.”
The man smiled. “Who says I'm not a hacker?”
“You? A hacker?” Janus snorted. “No way. You're too old.”
The man laughed again, white teeth shining pleasantly against his dark features. “How old do you think I am, kid?”
Janus scrunched his nose. “I dunno. Sixty? Sixty-five?”
The man doubled over, and his laughter was so infectious, Janus broke into a lopsided grin despite himself.
The man wheezed between chuckles. “Close, kiddo. Close. I’m thirty-nine, but that's close.”
With an amused shake of his head, the man pulled out a cigarette. His lighter needed a few clicks before the flame blossomed, but as soon as the cigarette’s tip flared, Janus smelled something more than nicotine. As much of a connoisseur of controlled substances as Janus was, he couldn't quite identify it. His mouth watered as he watched the bluish smoke trickle toward the ceiling.

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'teeth' - now this one was a challenge because teeth are largely symbolic in my WIP so I had a lot of options. My MC's difficult relationship to her incredibly immature mother often makes her poetically introspective.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

The WIP Snip Word of the day is 'teeth' - the following is an excerpt of my novel WIP Canary using the word of the day - In that way, all she wanted was for me to become a spitting image of her perfectionism and decorate her life like the von Trapp children. I was to be exceptional and gifted, but not to challenge anything. She hoped for a child that lubricated every conversation with saccharine dishonestly and charismatic suaveness. While I was gifted with a verbosity that rivaled college graduates, I went against the weak bonds of her authority and frequently, from her point of view, embarrassed her. Sometimes, my presence was enough. She'd taught me to be a rebel, the kind of woman that no man can tie down and challenges everything, who kicks in the teeth of the unscrupulous. Yet, somehow, she never thought I'd use those very skills against her iron will.

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'rig' - this was tricky and I had to get super flexible here by selecting 'manipulate', even though contextually I mean 'to influence' rather than 'to move.' Definitely going by vibes here.

This excerpt shows some of the drama with my MC Bekah.
#WriteSky

The WIP Snip word of the day is rip - however, I did not have this word in my WIP so I had to get extremely creative and select 'manipulate' despite the contextual meaning - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP with the word 'manipulated' - Since her return, I'd accepted that Logan was going to draw a deep line in the dirt. I was a friend. He was the boyfriend. Family and loved ones first. I'd be lingering in the lobby of our lives for the foreseeable future. The only thing stopping this was Bekah's raw tenacity. The thing Logan didn't understand was that the person he claimed to know so intimately could not be molded or manipulated by will. She was brilliantly bright, the kind of person who blazed like a star. It didn't matter what Logan wanted. If Bekah wanted it, she'd have it one way or another.
