Questo collage presenta una raccolta di riquadri ingranditi tratti dall’immagine della massiccia regione di formazione stellare IC 348 ottenuta dal James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) della NASA. Ciascuno dei sei pannelli mette in evidenza caratteristiche di particolare interesse visibili nell’intero campo: 1. Stella immersa in una nebulosa: questa piccola porzione del campo contiene due stelle profondamente immerse in una nube di gas e polvere. La luce infrarossa a lunghezza d’onda più corta proveniente dalla stella più grande viene assorbita dalla polvere, per cui la stella appare più brillante alle lunghezze d’onda maggiori, rappresentate in arancione. Lo stesso assorbimento da parte della polvere produce le sagome scure visibili nell’immagine. 2. Ammasso stellare centrale: la regione centrale di IC 348 è dominata da sottili e vaporose cortine di gas che formano un grande anello. I venti provenienti dalle numerose stelle modellano le nubi di gas e polvere interstellari, mentre le nubi riflettono la luce delle stelle dell’ammasso, formando quella che viene definita una nebulosa a riflessione. 3. Stelle e deboli deflussi: qui, nelle zone periferiche del campo, due stelle emergono luminose dalle nubi di gas e polvere. Le stelle appaiono altrettanto brillanti, ma quella arancione è maggiormente immersa nella nube. Sottili archi e chiazze rosse nelle vicinanze delle stelle sono onde d’urto calde e luminose, generate da eruzioni che si propagano ad alta velocità dalle stelle. 4. Oggetti Herbig-Haro: questa regione relativamente piccola, vicino alla parte superiore dell’immagine, è ricca di lunghi deflussi luminosi e di colori intensi nelle onde di gas e polvere. I deflussi, noti come oggetti Herbig-Haro, sono prodotti dai venti stellari o dai getti emessi dalle protostelle, che si fanno strada attraverso le dense nubi che le circondano. Ben tre oggetti presenti in quest’area sono già stati in precedenza oggetto di immagini dedicate, a dimostrazione di quanto sia ricca questa regione di formazione stellare. 5. Lente gravitazionale: questo minuscolo oggetto, che a prima vista sembra quasi un pianeta dotato di un anello, è in realtà costituito da due galassie. Quella blu è più vicina a noi, mentre la galassia arancione si trova a grandissima distanza, dietro di essa, ma le due sono allineate in modo quasi perfetto. Di conseguenza, la luce proveniente dalla galassia arancione viene deviata dalla gravità della galassia blu, producendo un’immagine ingrandita e deformata. 6. Galassie a spirale: alcune delle galassie più evidenti che si possono osservare oltre le nubi di gas e polvere. Sebbene la regione di IC 348 si trovi a circa 1.000 anni luce dalla Terra, queste galassie sono distanti milioni di anni luce, mentre le galassie ancora più piccole che appaiono sullo sfondo come punti colorati si trovano a distanze che arrivano a miliardi di anni luce.
