THE PRIMAL MATRIX OF MIND Page 47 …inquiry and self-awareness is required for good scholarship is evident in that the field of anthropology, even early on, asserted that researchers needed to do their own therapy, uncover their own biases, before they could hope to interpret other cultures. The idea was that one needed to take back one’s personal unconscious projections to understand another culture. Which, by the way, is a shallower version of the message of this work that one must pull back all the Veils of projected early experience so as to better approach any overstanding of any larger Reality. These early anthropologists — Ruth Benedict (1934), for example — were aware how their own cultures and personal histories influenced what they saw in others ... in their case, in other cultures. While they said self-inquiry should be done, it is not done now, if it ever really was. Lacking this self-awareness everything scientists come up with is riddled through with unconscious pain and the seemingly archetypal creations come of them. Like any other paradigm, these earliest of our experiences will direct and constrain us even in terms of where we will look to explore. They force us to interpret the data we find into constructions of assumptions which skew and often reverse the interpretations that should arise from them. Yes, that should logically arrive from them.

In doing this clearing away of fear- and pain-laden prompts to our perception and interpretations of it, we might approach that view ec-static, that cosmic overstanding that is normally denied us out of the fact that we have such powerful determinants on our perception at the beginnings of our lives as the traumas prenatally and perinatally. So it is that in Book Five, Womb with a View, I continue the explo- ration of the Veils across our perception of clear Reality begun in The Secret Life of Stones and continued in these volumes, Dance of the Seven Veils I, II, III. Specifically, I do this regarding the perceptional configurations arising from our experience in the womb. I touch as well upon some of those emanating from our experience of birth and the events around conception. However, the elements of mythology surrounding birth are addressed already with thoroughness by Stanislav Grof, so I leave that to him, and I bring his insights forward with appropriate credit. And the elements of mythology peri-conceptionally, that is to say, emanating from the events around conception, while introduced in Dance of the Seven Veils III, and touched upon in Womb with a View, are taken up in greater detail in the book following, which is Book 6 in the Series. INTRODUCTION Page 2 The First Descent — Bipedalism A long long time ago ... we’re talking millions of years, double digits millions ... our ancestors lived in trees in a region of the Earth now called Africa.1 Humanity’s First Home Was the Trees Our primate forbears were arboreal, scurrying along tree limbs and with a small amount of ability to brachiate, that is, to swing below the limbs and branches, like some primates do today. We slept in branches, and we took nourishment from the trees. We were primarily fruitarian, augmenting our diet with insects, caterpillars, and the like. We did not hunt or eat meat. Foraging was the way to go and was eminently sufficient during normal times. Life was good; but as happens, it did not last forever. A change came upon the Earth. It was a global warming during the Miocene Era. The Miocene Era lasted from 23 to 5.3 million years ago and included periods of both warming and cooling of the Earth’s climate, though overall it was warmer than the preceding Oligocene Era and the following Pliocene. Before sharp drops in temperature at around fourteen million years ago and again at eight million years ago, the Earth had experienced a particularly torrid time.

Our Deepest Self Is Feminine ... for Men and Women To begin, in Jungian psychology the anima is, for the man, the female symbol of all his repressed feelings, spirituality ... all his “feminine” qualities. But it is related to the more encompassing Divine Feminine which exists in men and women. Let me explain. The Divine Feminine, or Goddess, is the connection with Divinity that we lose because of the pain of birth; it is rooted in our experience in the womb. It is the “heart,” the Love that new-agers make so much about; it is the “one Love,” the “one heart,” that activists look to. It rises up in one, once one has felt through one’s painful birth feelings ... it is on the other side of them; one says that one’s “heart” opens. PRODIGAL HUMAN Page 50 However the outside world and its events are infinitely more random, haphazard, and uncertain than the events of any species before birth. Biology is simply a lot more consistent than are the actions of humans or the outside world. So those analogous needs of ours that are going to be imperfectly met because of the randomness of human action and the outside world are going to be met near perfectly and consistently for other species inside the biological confines of their existence before birth. Thus our traumatic birth, plus our imperfect satisfaction of needs after birth, makes for a wide variety of types of humans and personalities. Yet all of them are in some way more deprived and stressed than they would be without those first two elements. So the ones who are responsible for providing the satisfaction of those postnatal needs of the infant are going to be such impaired adults. Consider then how well they are likely to perform in providing for the excessive neediness of the newborn compared to the auto- matic and near perfect satisfaction of needs for other species at that same relative biological stage of development being in a perfectly providing biological surround of one sort or other. There are realities constituted by the fact that the perceiver is from the vegetable kingdom — you might call them vegetablely-constituted realities, or from the animal kingdom, planetmatedy-constituted realities, or by virtue of being mammalian (you’ve got it from here), or out of the fact of belonging to one of the many taxonomies or other biological categories of species, or from the fact that all exist on something that they perceive to be Earth ... and so on. There is the famous ending of the movie, 2001, just mentioned, of the bright fetus within a silvery sphere floating in the perfect peace of space. Bowman, the astronaut, is alone in space at the end of a long journey that gradually got out of control, helped along by a computer, called Hal, which had gone rogue and become sinister. That plot development represents humans at the finale of our trajectory of technological progress, having gone as far as we can with machines alone. However, where death should come, instead Bowman transforms into a giant fetus, surrounded by a transparent orb of light, looking like a new-born star. It is a fetus appearing as the contented and aware one of a BPM I state — wide-eyed, receptive, and glowing ... and obviously at peace with its state in the Universe ... with unknown yet magnificent new beingness before him. Along the lines of us having greater awareness during our fetal state, there was a very interesting episode of the Moonlighting series in the late Eighties which — coincidentally employing an article and book title of mine, “A Womb With a View” — showed Bruce Willis in a womb-like enclosure as a fetus viewing, with the help of a higher spiritual ally, the upcoming events of his life.

Eros Versus Thanatos In the struggle between the current powers of life and death, it is helpful to remember Freud’s paradigm-shifting observations about the human psyche regarding Eros and Thanatos, what he called the death drive. Freud showed how all human lives are drawn out against the background of each person’s inner struggle between the opposing forces of life and death ... Eros and Thanatos. Freud advanced an understanding that made his insights revolutionary, specifically, that each of us carry within us a Will to Die. “Sometimes the Lights Are Shining on Me.” Freud observed that we act out a will to live and to be in the sun and to have fun and to love and to like goodness and health and truth. That’s Eros. We share it with all of Nature. “Other Times I Can Barely See.” Freud also saw that we have at other times an opposite drive or instinct that we wish to die. That feeling causes us to want to live in the dark; to not be around people; to shy away from life and the light and being seen and recognized and even to wanting to be lonely.
