G'afternoon #TFOTSnip!
Miss Irena addressing the newly arrived students of the school, laying down the situation for them for the month that is to come, firstly by dismissing the manor staff for a month-long holiday (except for Cook).
#writesky #writingprompts #writingcommunity

As if on cue, the line of servants takes a bow and then proceeds to exit through the front door, walking past the confused students. I catch a glimpse of a waiting minivan waiting for them outside, doors open and luggage already inside. Only the man in brown and another, more scruffy looking older man in the well-worn remains of a black and white uniform remains where the group of adults stood.
“You may be wondering why I just did that,” Irena continues, and she’s not wrong. “The ones who have returned know well why, as do a few others. For the rest, a part of this month will consists of you learning about the prepared materials as well as learning to respect your surroundings, especially if they are the property of other people. Now you won’t be employed to perform such burdensome tasks such as polishing all the silverware or re-shingling the roof or any such task, but you will be expected to clean up after yourselves and keep the place tidy.” A few rumbles of discontent creep up, but the group seems mostly accepting of this.
“And to make sure that all bring their side to this agreement, Jeffrey will keep a watchful eye on all for this purpose,” Irena says then gestures back towards where the creature is standing on his shelf on the one wall, in plain view of everyone below. He takes the opportunity to stand up on his back legs to grasp at the air excitedly like a raccoon would do. Strange animal.

Today’s word is: Respect

Show some to your fellow human beings today.

@samaccardi.bsky.socialSep 18, 2026, 3:41 PM

Been in a bit of a writing funk lately but I think I cleared that creative hurdle. Also been in editing jail with Kamigoe, prepping for the launch. But today, have a snip from a quick scene I wrote of a WIP that’s been bouncing around my head.

#writesky #writingprompts #TFOTSnip #writingcommunity

"Been you to Rhamara, Master Cay?" Ryth asked.
Cay grunted. "A time there was, when naught by the Senators and the Emperor himself could utter the Sacred City's name."
A smile crossed Aelfwynn's face. "A time there was when Rhamara had earned such reverence. Alas, now it is a ruin. A pale shadow of its former self, Sir Cay. Rhamara it shall be, henceforth."
The City Atop the World. The Sacred City. The Marbled Crown. It had many names in its heyday...but Aelfwynn spoke true. Rhamara was a ruin, and its Empire long gone. The memory of the Empire was but a spectre to the folks of this day and age, and it was never coming back.
"I take it you have been to the city, Master Cay?" Ryth
pressed.
Cay's lip curled. "I have."
"How long ago?"
"Long enough..."
"How long?"
"Not long enough to see it in its prime under the earliest Princeps, nor under the first Imperator Mundi a few centuries later, but enough to know that even in its twilight, the city was a marvel..." The disgust left Cay's face, and instead was replaced by a look of longing. The same look one had for a lover, or a lost friend who was dead and never to return.

G'afternoon #TFOTSnip!
Aftermath of a short but vicious battle against monster crabs. Spoilered for spoilers. Also spoiler, the accent is South African.
#writesky #writingprompts #writingcommunity

“The others! There are more crabs!” I say, just as the students come walking towards us, looking a bit worse for wear with more torn clothes and a few scrapes, flanked by two tall, slender figures wielding large swords of their own and in similar attire as Gizelda, but far less ornate, more ornate and silvery-grey in colour. I look past them to see two disintegrating mounds of crab shell, blasted apart with fire and sand and with several large icicles sticking out of them.
“Oh. Nevermind I guess,” I say.
“Dealt with, General Hallow, but there are more like those, and other strange creatures all throughout the forest. We do not know what animates these,” one of the new soldiers says, and Gizelda nods and finally lifts up her own flamespear up into the air.
“I see. It seems XX XXX has been taken by others, and the tracks we saw is of that which took her. We will be following to reclaim XX. Vran, Seelth, take the flanks, kill any non-human that doesn’t belong in this forest, and be on the lookout for more Venns, they’ll be students of our esteemed Headmistress here.” Now that the situation seems less imminently stabby, I hear that her accent is one I’ve never heard before, I think. It’s one I cannot exactly place, not from any other country or region in north America or Europe, as far as I can tell.

Day 36 - September 18th

This one IS super specific. So I will accept the name of literally any country; real, fictional, current, or past, as a stand in.

G'afternoon #TFOTsnip!
Milly here seeing something she's not yet ready to allow herself to comprehend yet.
#writesky #writingprompts #writingcommunity

“I… don’t really like to use it. It’s done a lot of damage in my life so far,” I hear Christine say in a despairing tone.
“Oh, I know all about that, but this is the place to make these things shine, right? Come on, show me yours and I’ll show you mine!” Ari says, and is met with a half-committing grunt from Christine, which can only mean she’s about to agree to whatever this is, and I decide enough is enough and move to intercept the two.
A deep red, almost crimson light blooms around the corner just as I round it, and the image that meets my eyes stabs my consciousness like nothing I can remember. Both Ari and Christine have their backs turned to the hallway, and the thick carpet means my footsteps were muffled enough for them not to have heard my approach.
Christine is holding her right hand out, and about a centimeter above it is a deep, blood-red flame with an almost black core, not supported by any physical means and not feeding off of any fuel that I can discern. Fire isn’t supposed to look like that. She moves her hand around, and the flame follows it as if she’s controlling the flame. Controlling the flame? That’s not possible! I reverse back into the hallway and stand with my back against the wall as my brain races to try and process the images I just saw while the two students continue.
“Oh, that’s nice! Hellfire! Could come in handy!” Ari sounds enthusiastic about what he’s seeing.

A screenshot from a story titled “My Light”; the word “tolerate” is highlighted. The snippet reads:

“Our future King is a very bright man, I’ve heard.”
He rolls his eyes.
“And he cares for his citizens more than anything else. I’ve seen it time and time again with my own eyes.”
Lio elbows him lightly in the stomach. “Quit that. You’re making it hard to focus.”
“Am I? I can’t imagine why.”
He glares at Percival, who can’t help but smile.
“It’s a miracle I tolerate you at all.”
“A miracle indeed.”

G'afternoon #TFOTSnip!
Milly reaches the end of her tolerance and control here, thanks to an arrogant mage and his meddling ways.
#writesky #writingprompts #writingcommunity

It’s all too much for me. I can’t bear it. I long to forget, to shy away from the inevitable punishment and correction, even though that person is no longer in my life! Why do I care about her? I’m seeing what I’ve always seen yet could not tolerate myself to comprehend, standing in front of me as plain as day.
I cannot bear it, even my own body betrays me, is not what it should be.
I feel the old words shatter under the pressure. This is not real, only normal things are real. They crack and burst asunder, forced aside by the truth, the reality that overwhelms. A cataclysmic struggle ensues and nearly overwhelms my mind.
“Milly?” Gen asks, reaching out a hand towards me.
I cannot bear it.
I do the only thing I can.
I turn and run. Out of the classroom, towards the kitchen where I know the only open door is, out into the manor’s back yard and the now pouring rain with my blood threatening to blind me. Around the manor and towards Coppervale, but through the forest inbetween, as I cannot comprehend anything but away in this moment. The chaotic maelstrom of struggling, conflicting fragment steals my mind of all rational thought. My self clings to consciousness amidst it all like a chicken swept up in a tornado.
I cannot bear it.
I can only run.

G'morning #TFOTSnip!
There the school discusses a move in venue for a specific class, plus the concerns associated with.
#writesky #writingprompts #writingcommunity

“Oh! Ohhh! Yeah, this’ll work!” I say, finally catching on.
“Which room, though?” Cook asks from the side.
“Why, the dining hall of course!” Irena answers, making Cook scowl.
“We use that for dining, you know, in case you don’t remember.”
“We can just move the tables and chairs and things out of the way!”
“Sure, we,” Cook says, and I decide to head off what might turn into an argument here.
“The students can help with that. Could help as a warm up exercise before we start off, since we can’t do laps around the manor anymore, and just running around the dining hall isn’t as effective.”
“Then where are they gonna eat instead?”
“Uh, we clear the place out every day, move the chairs and tables back?” I suggest.
“That’s going to be a lot of wear and tear on the furniture before the month’s out,” Cook responds and folds his arms.
“That’s fine,” Irena interjects, fully settling the point as an unspoken order, “the biggest concern will be the students. That table is heavy, I don’t want them getting hurt moving it around!”

Ronan in the 27th century for the #TFOTSnip

Don't show too much of yourself to your classmates...

(Yes, there's a whole lot of worldbuilding behind this little school scene)

‘What are you doing?’ Donnie next to him asked.
Ronan looked shyly at his neighbour and put away his paper. He probably should have known better than to use this moment for writing a letter.
‘Nothing, just writing something.’
‘But why? Writing is dumb.’
‘Nevermind… I was trying to write someone.’
Donnie looked at him incredulously, and now Augie behind him was following the conversation too. Inside he felt everything become tense, but this wasn’t the time for shutting down.
‘There’s nothing wrong with writing Pen Pal letters.’
‘But that’s for girls. Talking is easier, man. You don’t need to make your head tired with writing.’
‘She is a girl, actually. And I’ll talk to her too this weekend.’
Now other boys turned their heads.
‘Ronan is writing a girl?’ ‘An actual girl? You have a girlfriend? Impossible.’
‘She’s just my friend and a girl.’ He repeated.
‘Come on, girls don’t want to be friends with Epsilons like you. And girls and boys can’t be friends.’ Augie said, polishing his Delta badge.
‘Probably and E-girl anyway.’ Kevin added.
‘She’s got no ranking, only a Free Person badge. And she’s definitely my friend. She’s showing me around in her village this weekend.’ Ronan said as nonchalantly as possible, trying not to show how he felt inside.
They fell silent. ‘Your friend is an outlaw chick?’
‘A legal citizen of the Ghost Town federation actually.’ He said defiantly.
‘And you’re going to visit those witches? You know they’re just feeding you to the panthers?’
‘They’re a civilised modern country that respects human rights. And she’s my friend. We’ve met each other before and we’ve been writing letters.’
‘All of you, shut up and mind your math problems!’ The teacher yelled.

Milly may be a lot of things, like the center of a cloud of somewhat severe GBH, but at the very least she's not inconsiderate of other people's property... within reason.
#writesky #writingprompts #writingcommunity

“Please proceed to the mistresses office. Up the stairs and through the central hallway, then up the second staircase at the back and retracing through another central hallway. The office is basically above the front doors, right above us.”
“Gotcha! Easy enough!” I say and stomp my boots on the doormat a few times and then rub each one before stepping inside.”
“Many thanks for the consideration, Miss Milly!” Matthew says again, and I can’t help but smile, until my eyes adjust to the lower light and I see the entrance hall.
It’s large and expansive, reaching up two floors with a crystal chandelier hanging down from the middle of the ceiling. Two curving staircases hug either side of the room to meet at the top at a large landing. A pile of luggage is stacked at the bottom of the right hand staircase. I look up from that spot to see a curious sight on the balcony railing just above of it.

Let's do a #TFOTSnip snippet here too.

Does he bring her along to the wedding of lady Zaiah and the diplomatic talks that will happen too for her capacities or does he need her as an emotional support diplomat on the mission?

(The answer is probably 'yes')

‘But I was thinking of somewhere closer, just across the strait.’
‘You want me to come along to Anka? As a diplomat?’
‘Half as a diplomat. Half for something else, though it still has to do with Yanipol. And the date isn’t set yet; it depends on when they get married.’
‘Who’s getting married?’
‘Zaiah Ansifer and Jano. They’ve been engaged for far too long, actually they've been living together for ages, but they never managed to organize the actual wedding. I’d like to make it to the official ceremony in Anka City at the very least —we could stay at Ansifer Castle then— and, if possible, the small wedding in the temple in her village, too.’
‘That’s hardly diplomatic work, though.’
‘True, but in between, there are a number of official conversations I need to hold with Lady Penda, with local representatives of the Kerbor Order, and with a few Yanipolite envoys coming specifically for the wedding. Economic and political matters, rather important too. And I’ve found that sort of thing goes better when you aren’t alone. Zaiah won’t exactly be available at the time, and she’s the one I’d normally ask when I'm in Anka.’
Shandri looked up from her beer.
‘Me? Aren’t you overestimating me? Can’t you just ask one of the usual diplomats?’
He sighed. ‘I don’t think I’m overestimating you; besides, you sometimes have insights from the common people that the others lack. Of course, Rhodo di Garg will be there, and others, but I’d like to have someone with me whom I feel personally at ease with.’

Got the meaning of the word, and that's just about as close as I'm gonna get to it specifically.

“Hold that thought,” I tell him and turn to Irena. “So, he’s a wizard, I’m half dragon, Gen and her sisters are half fae, the rest of the students here are their own thing, but what does that make you? Are you a Venn like the rest of us here?”
Once again, a deep silence falls over the room. In both rooms, actually, as all noise from the kitchen ceases as well, and all of the space is filled with silent shock.
“No,” Irena eventually answers. “No. My history is… a complicated one. And long, so very very long. No, I am not a Venn, I come from far away and was banished to this land very long ago. I lived a feral life here for many, many years until I found my family. Or, more accurately, my family found me. The Van Der Vaals took me in, made me part of their family and built this home. What I was is long past, never to return. Now? I’m just Mrs Irena, and I try to help my students on their journey to Decide as far as I can.”
“So that was you in that picture! So you’re over a hundred years old?”
“Yes. Yes, you could say that,” she answers, and I can smell that she’s omitting a lot more detail than she’s revealing. I feel like I should press for more, dig a little deeper, but I feel an increasing amount of stares bore into me, silently telling me to back off. I guess everyone here appreciates Irena. Maybe I should take the hint?
I back off.

Giving you lucky people a two-fer cuz I’ve been busy lately! HONSE for everyone!

CW for the first on. Some light mention of fire arms and death.

The second one will mean something to anyone who has ever considered themselves a horse person.

#writesky #writingprompts #TFOTSnip #writingcommunity

First and foremost, I needed to get my wife out of jail. Second, of course, I needed to figure out if my wife was actually the cold-blooded killer Tweedy was making him out to be. I'm not naïve, nor am I a child. I'd seen Evie kill before. I'd watch her shoot Raiders down off their horses with very little remorse. I'd seen her gun down Raiders, men and women of all ages, as they ran off after a failed raid on the ranch. She never cared if their backs were turned.
I'd seen her gun a child down once. Not much older than Teo was at the time, sixteen or seventeen. He'd tried to steal Kala from the barn, and the horse kicked him. He was bloodied, dazed, and tried to flee. Evie took his head off with her 44 before he even knew what hit him.
To this day I still can't even think about what she did to that one young Raider who'd once tried to go after Ella when we were out in the overseeing the herd while they were in the far fields grazing. The pony and mare came to a sudden stop and I knew we'd arrived.
Not a moment too soon. I took a sniff, and set my jaw to stead it. Tweedy dismounted first, then attempted to help me down, but I refused. I could get on and off my own horses—or ponies—by myself, and the day I couldn't, I
should be taken out back and be shot, because life wasn't worth living if it couldn't be lived from the back of a horse.
He stopped me before I could make my way over to the station door.
"I gotta," he said gruffly. He raised his hand, his index finger looped through a pair of old-style handcuffs. They looked to be practically antiques, but of course, machinery with circuits and wires didn't work so well on the Red Planet.
