THE STORY
The screech was painful as the subway took the bend out of the downtown core. Between that and the jostling, Sarah was awake once more.
It wasn’t like her to fall asleep mid-day, but the heat and vibration had become too much. She’d have worn a lighter jacket, but Fall had settled over Chicago.
Stretching in the confined space, she caught herself making eye contact with a stranger and immediately looked away. A smile slid across his face.
“Shit! Shit! Shit!” Sarah cursed softly to herself.
A girl from smalltown nowhere, she wanted to believe that people were inherently kind, but the city scared the hell out of her.
“Focus on the journey,” she chanted as she clutched the map tighter. “Soon enough you’ll reach the final stop on the Planes, Trains and Automobiles tour.”

An old photo of a husband and wife standing roadside in front of the mountains near Canmore, Alberta. (Photo via @createdbyrcw)

THE STORY
The photo fell to the bookshop floor as quickly as Angus had picked the old green hardcover off the shelf and started to flip through its musty pages.
Retrieving the picture, he was instantly met with a middle-aged couple standing roadside with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. From the yellowing and muddiness, he suspected the photo was decades old.
Angus was mesmerized by the couple, a paunchy man in short sleeves and a slender woman in a kerchief. Who were they? And where were they?
Then he flipped the photo. “Al and me. Canmore. 1968.”
Suddenly, Angus was making a trip to Alberta, and he was bringing this 1964 edition of A Field Guide to Birds by Roger Tory Peterson with him.

THE STORY
“What’re you doing?” Jackson snarled as Tanya stripped down to her sports bra and panties.
“I’m tired of waiting for you to come up with a solution,” she replied, kicking off her sneakers. “So, I’m swimming back to the dock.”
They had been stuck on the bayou for two hours by this point, humidity smothering them and sun broiling them through a break in the trees draped in Spanish moss. The impromptu swamp tour ending with a spluttering outboard.
“I’m hot, I’m tired, and I’m hungry,” Tanya pressed. “At the very least, the swim will cool me off.”
“You can’t –” Jackson started as the boat rocked violently, and Tanya was gone in a splash.
“Tanya!” he screamed, only to see movement in the surface weeds.

Robbie’s vision blurred as the steam from his coffee cup condensed on his glasses. In his mouth, a piece of cranberry scone that he’d forgotten to chew.
“You can’t keep running from this,” Greg had yelled at him just 10 hours ago.
“I’m not running,” Robbie bleated. “I have a meeting in Montreal.”
But as he waited in the concourse for the 8:15 flight, Robbie wondered if Greg hadn’t hit on something.
Not long ago, Robbie did most of his meetings online. But over the past year, since his father died, he jumped at every opportunity to leave town.
The old man died alone. That had stuck with Robbie, but was Greg the one?
“Flight 175 for Montreal now boarding at Gate A3.”

THE STORY
Janice had finally had enough. It was clear that Rodney had no intention of replacing the missing bulb in the dusty light fixture on the back deck

She was tired of trying to read her books under the meagre light that penetrated the patio doors from the living room, particularly when he had the TV blaring.

Janice debated whether she wanted one of those yellow bug lights but opted for a bright LED. Besides, she’d have to buy a bug light, and they had LEDs.

First things first, though, she’d need to clear the cobwebs from the fixture.

Climbing the step stool, Janice ran the dust cloth along the…

You know, reading in the bedroom with ear plugs is pretty comfortable.

THE STORY
The Bala Baleens season hung in the balance. A Scottsdale defenceman tackled winger Jerry Whyte on the lone breakaway of his middling career.

Final game. Bala down 3-2 in the final seconds. Overtime would send Bala to the post-season. And now, they’d been awarded a penalty shot… by Jerry.

The only goals Jerry had managed this season were an own-goal and a shot off his face into an empty net.

A deep breath. Jerry snags the puck at centre. He makes a beeline for the net. Zero finesse in this boy. And as if to prove the point, Jerry trips on a rut in the ice, flinging his arms and stick forward.

The stick blade catches the baubling puck, which immediately goes airborne. Up. Up. Up toward the corner of the net. TINK!

Nesting on the rainy shores of the Chesapeake, an osprey descends with a stick for its soggy mate. (Photo by @createdbyrcw)

THE STORY
The male osprey soared majestically through the rain-drenched sky, following the gentle curves of the Chesapeake as it wound its way toward the Atlantic.

The raptor ignored the buffeting maelstrom, slicing through the air currents, using every subtle change in wind direction and pressure to stay aloft for just a few minutes more.

Clutched within its powerful talons was a thick branch, a victim first of the storm in the nearby wood and now of the avian grand designs that lie ahead.

Raising its beak, the male fully extended its glorious plumage, slowing its forward motion and plummeting 30 feet to its mate below hunkered over three eggs in a chaotic tangle of twigs.

“Seriously, another stick?” she screeched. “It’s a nest, not a ziggurat.”

The male simply looked skyward. These eggs could not hatch soon enough.

No one believe the scientists, but maybe that was to be expected.

No one believed the scientists when what they told us was perfectly logical if unwelcome. Could we truly expect anyone to listen when what they said was so surreal, so outside rational explanation?

Even the scientists didn’t believe the scientists… at first.

Believe them or not. Heed their warnings or not. It happened as they said.

Eleven minutes ago, the Sun abruptly extinguished. It wasn’t eclipsed. It didn’t dim. Its roiling furnace simply stopped.

Three minutes ago, the streetlights came on, and it immediately grew colder. In a few minutes, the ensuing panic will die down… permanently.

Silhouetted skaters glide around the outdoor rink at Toronto’s Nathan Philips Square lit up with pre-Christmas lights. (Photo by @createdbyrcw)

THE STORY
“Isn’t this such a beautiful night, Joss?” Karen squealed as she flew past her high school friend, cornering at breakneck speed for yet another lap.

Jocelyn was having none of it. Her face was cold. Her hands were cold. Her feet were cold. Hell, her barely breasts were cold under her down parka.

“Sorry! ‘scuse me! “Look out!” Karen cried as she bobbed and weaved through the pre-Christmas crowd.

“You’re gonna kill somebody!” Jocelyn cried into the blur of skating silhouettes.

Suddenly, a wall of snow blanketed Jocelyn, as Karen dug her blades into the ice and almost body checked her friend.

Karen threw her arms around Jocelyn to keep them both upright, and a flush of warmth melted the cold as Jocelyn unconsciously leaned into the embrace.

“Loser buys hot chocolate,” Karen laughed before racing off the ice. This was going to be a long night.
