The flying gurnard doesn't fly high or far, and only along the ocean bed on the Mediterranean and on the Atlantic fringes. But the magnificent flourish of those wings, and their beautiful adoment of bright blue spots, makes it a breathtaking sight. 'Gurnard" comes from the French word for grunting, because the water moving through its swim bladder makes little grunting sounds.

#SomethingBeautiful - the colour-shifting ethereally gorgeous dancer known as the leafy seadragon. If I were privileged to be a dragon's chosen rider, this would be my preference.

The leafy seadragon floats among the kelp forests off south and west Australia like a glorious fringed and tasselled scarf or the dagged sleeve of a renaissance beauty's gown. Its colours change at will and its fronds help to conceal it amid the foliage. It's often mistaken for a seahorse but it's more closely related to the pipefish, bridging the two species.

The pōhutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) a.k.a. the New Zealand Christmas tree flowers around December. This is not it (but similar), it's a Metrosideros collina 'Tahiti' which flowers earlier. Like around now. #SomethingBeautiful #flower #TamakiMakaurau #Auckland #Aotearoa #NewZealand

#SomethingBeautiful - What better place to wait for my car to the airport than in the tranquil reconstructed garden of Tudor-eta Rothe House? It's filled with birdsong and glorious old Irish varieties of fruit and flower.

The rear elevation of Rothe House, Kilkenny, seen through the archway between the orchard/fruit garden and the flower and vegetable garden. Note the metal braille interpretation plaque on the left- I saw several of these on the stone walls. The garden is wheelchair accessible round the perimeter though some of the cross paths might be too narrow for modern motorised wheelchairs.

Yesterday was 1st day of the Auckland CRL train stations running, so caught train from Avondale to Manukau (without getting off), then back to town. CRL stations were buzzing but outer ones relatively quiet. #publicTransport #train #CRL #Auckland #TamakiMakaurau #AucklandScenes #somethingBeautiful
