He used to look over his shoulder as a toddler struggling to keep up with his sisters, chasing after them with enraged squeals and chubby fists clenched after they stole his crayon with light-hearted giggles. He still doesn't know why he felt the need to stop that first time, why he had to look back at the footsteps he wore in the carpet, new and still soft enough to deform under his slight weight. It was like there was some other presence in his head urging him back, urging him to look. There wasn't anything there beyond his faint tracks. Until the shadows leached out of the fibres, filling the depressions like an oil spill. Like they were waiting for him to dent the earth just so they could flood it, leaving no light behind.
