We're by the sea for today's #OnlineArtExchange @artukdotorg.bsky.social

We've chosen the paintings of Alfred Wallis - a self taught artist who first picked up a paintbrush aged 70! Having lived by the sea all his life, his works often feature port landscapes made with household paint on cardboard.

Blocky painting of three ships, two with steam and one with sails, on the water outside a harbour wall.Blocky painting of four ships on the water along a walled coastline, with a bridge and green fields near the shore.

🌊Today's #OnlineArtExchange theme is 'life by the sea' for 'John Bellany: Anchored' at Scottish Fisheries Museum!

This small seascape, 'Surge of the Sea, Ardglass', is atmospheric and full of movement. Painted by Hans Iten, the fluent Impressionistic manner is typical of his style.

A painting of the sea as it meets a rocky coast. In the foreground we see a small inlet with two rocky cliffs, the waves going from deep blue to white as they smack against the rocks.

This week’s @artukdotorg.bsky.social #OnlineArtExchange theme is Life by the sea. We’ve chosen Stanhope Forbes’ A Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach (1885) from The Box Plymouth. Shortly after arriving in Newlyn, Forbes wrote of the beach at low tide: “Anything more beautiful… I never saw.”

An oil painting shows a busy beach scene with people sorting fish near boats, while a woman and a fisherman converse in the foreground by a boat.

Four people are on a beach: a girl with a basket, two seated men by fishing nets and fish, and a woman standing by a boat. Other figures and boats are visible in the background under a blue sky.

My pick for today's #OnlineArtExchange with @artukdotorg.bsky.social on the theme 'life by the sea'.

'Tarring the Boat' (1873) by Édouard Manet, showing the maintenance and hard work behind maritime life on the beaches of Berck.

An impressionistic oil painting showing two fishermen on a sandy beach applying hot, burning tar to the hull of a large dark boat. Flames and smoke rise from the vessel, while the calm blue sea and horizon stretch out in the background under an overcast sky.

Another wonderful pick for today's #OnlineArtExchange with @artukdotorg.bsky.social on the theme 'life by the sea'.

'Launching the Boat. Skagen' (1884) by the Swedish painter Oscar Björck, beautifully capturing the strength and daily labor of fishermen facing the tide.

A realistic oil painting depicting four rugged fishermen in traditional clothing working together to launch a large wooden boat into the ocean waves from a sandy beach. The sea is dynamic with white foam, and the sunlight highlights their expressions of effort.

My pick for today's #OnlineArtExchange with @artukdotorg.bsky.social on the theme 'life by the sea'.

A beautiful 1894 preparatory study by Joaquín Sorolla for his masterpiece 'The Return from Fishing', capturing a local fisherman and the Mediterranean light.

An impressionistic oil painting showing a fisherman in profile on a wooden boat at sea. The man wears a straw hat and light-colored clothing illuminated by the sun while handling a fishing net or basket. In the background, the calm blue sea and a distant sailboat can be seen.

This week's @artukdotorg.bsky.social's #OnlineArtExchange theme is reflections 🪞

We asked Europeana colleagues to share an artwork from our collections that made them pause and think. From Monet painting the French Riviera to a 1931 glass orb self-portrait - what would you pick?

@desailaur.bsky.socialSep 3, 2026, 2:04 PM

For today's #OnlineArtExchange theme 'reflections', I choose this striking painting: 'Woman before the Mirror' (1925) by the American artist Ellen Emmet Rand.

I love how the mirror captures her direct gaze, creating a beautiful contrast with the back view of her dress. @artukdotorg.bsky.social

Today's #OnlineArtExchange theme is 'reflections' 🪞

Sir John Lavery’s full-length portraits usually have an air of theatrical formality - however, the warm firelight and Hazel’s unadorned shoulders make 'The Green Coat' a tender and intimate study of his wife.

@chippenhammuseum.bsky.socialSep 3, 2026, 11:01 AM

Today's @artukdotorg.bsky.social #OnlineArtExchange theme is 'reflections', and we're sharing this work by local artist Bob Rudd, who is inspired by the landscape and architecture of the British Isles, including this view of the River Avon in Chippenham.

This week's @artukdotorg.bsky.social #OnlineArtExchange theme is reflections 🪞

We've chosen two Lake Scenes, each with mountains and trees and a colourful sky reflected in the water. With the composition of each work, these two paintings also appear to be mirror images of each other.

@desailaur.bsky.socialSep 3, 2026, 10:44 AM

🪞For today's #OnlineArtExchange theme 'reflections', I choose this beautiful detail from 'Young Woman at her Toilet' (1515) by the Venetian master Giovanni Bellini.

The delicate way she looks at her own reflection captures both physical and introspective beauty.

This week @artukdotorg #OnlineArtExchange is about reflections.
Reflections are a regular feature in the work of Orcadian artist Sylvia Wishart (1936–2008) A beautiful example of this is Reflections I from the Orkney Islands Council Collection on display at Stromness Academy

@penleehousegallery.bsky.socialSep 3, 2026, 8:53 AM

Today’s @artukdotorg.bsky.social #OnlineArtExchange theme is Reflections. Our choice is Harold Harvey’s Reflections, 1916, from Cyfarthfa Castle. His intimate portrait of his wife Gertrude captures light, mirrors and quiet domesticity—an atmosphere of contemplation.

🪞 Exploring the space between the gaze and the mirror for the #OnlineArtExchange with @artukdotorg.bsky.social

This beautiful piece, "New York Interior" (c. 1921) by Edward Hopper, perfectly captures the essence of intimacy and introspection through 'reflections'.
