This is not new information, but I'm glad Andrew Campbell has included it in his book and talked about it in his interview with Audrey Young in the NZH. It seems particularly pertinent today with Ukraine taking out a Russian data centre and the effect on far right bots #nzpol

The second term was more difficult with controversy over lockdowns, vaccination mandates, and demand for managed isolation. Political differences became polarised and online abuse towards Ardern heightened.

But some of it was stirred up by foreign players. On a visit to Microsoft head office in the United States, Brad Smith had revealed that Microsoft research showed New Zealand’s consumption of Russian state-sponsored disinformation about vaccinations had risen sharply at the end of December 2021, 30% higher than in Australia or the United States, and had peaked just before the occupation of Parliament grounds.

Campbell believes on reflection that Ardern was left “undefended” at the online abuse and wondered why more people did not go to her defence.

“In a sense, her strategy was to sort of ignore it and not engage with it,” he told the Herald.

“I don’t think in hindsight that’s the right strategy because actually, it’s not going away.”

Social media and disinformation were now such a big part of politics, and particularly against women, that the strategy needed to shift, to actively mobilise supporters and Labour members against it.

“I often felt she was quite isolated ... it would have been good to try and have more people drowning some of that out, coming to her defence more often, not just leaving it to her.

They seem hell bent on getting Labour, at the cost of #TOP destruction of home ownership.
