"How is it that you're so calm when you have like a #nation of people hunting down your ass?" Jin shouted.
Cosmo wryly smiled. "If they win, they beat up an old man. If they lose, they got beaten up by an old man. Either way, they lose. Also, it's hard being handsome."
Jin grimaced. #WIPSnips

Lots of nations and countries in this convo. In his youth, he recalls, #FrankMatsura was uncritical about Japan's colonial ambitions. #WIPsnips #nation

One month from launch date. www.dansato.com

Many of us believed that neighboring Korea was weak and would be occupied by someone, so why not Japan? It would be better if an Asian country ruled it, rather than Russia or Great Britain, both of which had interests in Korea. Europeans were carving up Asia like a roast pig. Some Asian nation had to rise to counter European power in the region and Japan was standing up to fill that role. China had its eye on Korea too. One student, Kusu, had read and become consumed by a Russian book, The Communist Manifesto. None of us had ever seen the book; it was always hidden and secure in his room. But he had learned many foreign words from it like proletariat and bourgeoisie, which he had insisted on teaching us.
“It isn’t complicated. Colonizing Korea is oppressive, no matter who does it,” Kusu said, gesturing like an orator. “If Japan wants to defend itself from European colonialism, it should support and strengthen Korea. If Asian nations banded together,” he argued, “they could collectively defend themselves and their sovereignty. If we colonized Korea, it wouldn’t be any more justifiable than the Europeans doing it, seizing a weaker country and exploiting its resources and labor for the benefit of its own wealthy class.”
A classmate pointed out that we, students at university, might be considered members of that wealthy class.

Nation, Dominion, domain, it's all the same, but Fred just had his spot & Edward does not have his permission to sit in it

The morning for them arrived about noon, and Marissa found herself alone in bed. Grabbing her bathrobe, she discovered Fred and Edward in the front room.

Edward had never been in a situation like this before. The silent yellow eyes were unflinching and cold, while Edward sat, arms crossed and unyielding.

“His record is forty-five minutes, and he won’t stop until you give him his spot back. Would you like some coffee?”

Edward never broke eye contact and simply said, “Yes, please.”

“I guess stubbornness is not species specific,” she joked.

"You did more than kill."

I thought about that truth, but then it swirled in my head with the idolatry my #nation hoisted onto its soldiers and the demonization that it heaped onto women like Sophie.

"Yeah," I acknowledged, "but it's the killing they pay you for." #WIPSnips #amquerying #booksky

I #reckon it sounds brutal to some,
but it’s about being not.

*the histories and the mysteries of the last world war...

The Arbitrarians had raided this small, blue planet what seemed now eons ago, back when the moon was a battlefield for all nations and the scene of our world’s last war. It was that lunar conflict that had led to our proverbial last stand against the much more advanced raiding horde that war had awakened.
We had, for all intents and purposes, traded one war for another. But those histories were now mysteries for most, though a few of the aged ones, Mariner among them, thought them to rest on the foundation of truth.
He recalled his mother explaining how their downfall progressed at a gradual pace. With the acceptance of defeat, and as the greed of people tends to do, they gradually came to welcome the Arbitrarians, almost as gods.
We surrender ourselves to only our memories, though wise men warned nostalgia was not an option if a revolt was ever to succeed. Too many among us wished things could be the way they were. Cowering amidst the ruins, they bowed to the Arbitrarians, unable translate their thoughts into actions.
“We bowed to their demands, subtle suggestions at first, that slowly slipped to mandatory commands with which we were left with no choice but to follow, as our world had slipped to become their human zoo.” Mariner recalled his mother’s oft-spoken words and most of her stories with clarity, even after her passing and the many years he now watched slip into “Pastime,” as so were those days suitably called by the Rubblers of L’undonetown
“Though that war had lasted decades, in the end, it is said, we fell to the force of the Arbitrarians almost immediately when their mother ship had emerged from the depths of a hole on the dark side of the moon.” The scene of his father’s demise, the hole called Finigan’s Crater.
“They came for our sun,” his mother had told him.

#nation from Far Worlds, Book Three of the Lonely Ship Saga.

Old-fashioned FTL means lots of time for reading. Bounty hunter Elm goes through her book collection.

(Read Lonely Ship here! ewanstone.uk/110-2/)

#writingcommunity #WritingPrompts #WIPsnips #spaceopera #erotica #nsfw

Elm had three books to her name. All were made of stained paper, and their spines were dog-eared and worn away. She preferred physical books for reading, since screens made her eyes hurt after a while. But in this one in particular, there was a section between chapters seventeen and nineteen where damage to the page had destroyed all legibility. She recalled what happened in the inky narrative void well enough, but it was still a shame to have to rely on her own memory and not the words of the original author.
This book she was now reading was a story about something called a ‘paige’, a sort of low-level nobleman’s soldier, who rises through the ranks of her home castle to eventually manage the armies of a whole nation. Elm liked to cheer the girl on in her quest for martial respect from her peers, even if she was an elf. She had nothing against elves, obviously, but their lives were very different to hers. The barriers this girl faced in her ascent were not ones Elm could necessarily sympathise with. And once or twice in the long, epic narrative, the girl jeopardises her whole career for the sake of some pretty boy or another she’s run into, which Elm thought was utterly inane. Still, a good read. A few more cycles, and she’d be finished with this one again. Then she’d move on to her second book, which was about space pirates, and then back and forth between the two, ad infinitum.
Her third book was called Twilit Tales of House Black, an eternal lend from Raven Manor, and she reserved that one for privacy.

Cerel is a little bit done with Drisal.
Or, just … done.

- Brother’s Keeper, my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power

"Not that way." Cerel rubbed his temples.
"Look. Lord Shelwon reprimanded me and Jer in front of your father, Lady Jannia and all the antler chiefs. Jer is furious. Now that we're confined to camp, he can't go on patrol. I guess he was planning to meet Virge and Weatherlin somewhere, and it's my
fault it won't happen. Jedhrath won't even speak to me. It hasn't been a good day, and I don't need you to be an idiot. I'm trying to help."

"Talamorë."

"Lord Shelwon was already frustrated enough to [redacted]. If you had pulled your vengeful, stupid stunt-"

"Vengeful? Stupid?" Drisal set the jar down.

"Apologies." He dodged the dizzying smell of
Drisal's breath. "I meant to say spiteful and moronic. The fate of NATIONS, including ours, rests in the balance here and all you can think about is revenge against your father!"
