On Megyn Kelly comments concerning Jane Doe's appearance:

What's truly disturbing here is that women who don't feel they are conventionally attractive are often more reluctant to come forward precisely because of these bullshit assumptions. Rape has nothing to do with desire and everything to do with humiliation and cruelty. You don't get plausible deniability because your victim is not considered a supermodel.

The gaslighting around "desirability" is especially pernicious: you're not supposed to assume you're "desirable" enough to be raped, but if you *don't* assume a man might want sex, well you "should have known". And if you're not a supermodel: hey, it's a "compliment". Your brutal assault and subsequent lifelong trauma transform into something you should be "grateful" for. That way, you get to feel twice as shitty. If you're not "gorgeous", you're "not allowed" to refuse anyone - because "who do you think you are?" It's profoundly dehumanizing. And that is the point.

This Catch-22 is deliberately engineered to shut women up when they are assaulted. That's viciously abusive in itself.
