#Superconductivity made super-er. Apparently #superconductors are plagued by quantum vortices, akin to tiny tornados causing disturbances. But channels carved only an atom high can control those vortices.

PLD of WSe₂ with in situ Raman: 125 films, 0.25% of 50,625 recipes, about 21 films a day.
People set the bounds, the score and the first 10 recipes.

Figures as reported.

#ChemSky #MaterialsScience #AcademicSky

Infographic titled AI found a WSe₂ growth window testing 0.25% of recipes. Subtitle: pulsed laser deposition with in situ Raman. A loop of four numbered stations circles the centre. 1, Grow: a laser plume over a substrate. 2, Stop: a falling reflectivity trace cut at 1 monolayer. 3, Score: a sharp Raman peak, labelled Raman peak sharpness. 4, Choose: a model curve with its peak marked, labelled next recipe. In the centre: 125 films grown, 4 settings, 50,625 grid recipes. A band labelled People says they chose the first 10 recipes, the bounds and the score, loaded substrates and targets and cleaned the laser window. Three figures follow: about 55 min per film, grow to score; 21 films a day, about 10 times conventional PLD; best window 526 °C at 71.4 mTorr. Bold line: The loop worked because the instrument judged every film before it left the chamber. Source: Harris et al., Small Methods 8, 2301763 (2024); search not converged.

Same 30 nm gold particles: 24.9 nm by AFM, 28.6 nm by DLS. That gap is physics.
61 labs, one isotherm: 1,757 to 9,341 m²/g. That gap is analysis.

Values are representative.

#ChemSky #MaterialsScience #AcademicSky

Chart titled One sample, three kinds of disagreement. Three panels. Physics: the same nominal 30 nm gold particles measured by six techniques on a 24 to 28 nm scale give AFM 24.9, SAXS 24.9, SEM 26.9 and TEM 27.6 for the particle itself, then ES-DMA 28.4 and DLS 28.6 for how it moves. Setup: eight TEM labs on the same particles vary by 2.6% on the mean size but 14.8% on the width of the distribution; in one lab 79% of imaged particles stood alone for automatic analysis. Analysis: sixty-one labs fitting the same isotherm for one MOF reported 1,757 to 9,341 square metres per gram, a factor of 5.3; all 18 isotherms spread by at least 300. Cards read Keep it, Record it and Write the rule down. A dark bar says a model sees one number per sample unless each row says which instrument asked which question. Footer: Before pooling results, separate the physics from the setup.

🔬 Why does AI miss the small phase in your XRD pattern?

One network found 94% of single phases but only 64% of minor phases (10–30 wt%).
Shifted peaks caused 48% of its errors.
Check the residual yourself.

Szymanski et al., Chem. Mater. 2021

#ChemSky #MaterialsScience #MLSky

Infographic titled Why AI misses the small phase in an XRD pattern. Section 1: a sketched diffraction pattern with four tall main-phase peaks and three small minor-phase peaks, circled as A, weak, near the noise; B, hidden under a main peak; C, shifted, strain moves it off its reference. Section 2, how often it is right on simulated test patterns: one phase alone 94%, main phase at 70 to 90 wt% 92%, minor phase at 10 to 30 wt% 64%. Section 3: 48% of its errors came from shifted peaks, as in C. Section 4, what a person checks: A, the residual after the main phase is fitted; B, overlaps, a shoulder on a main peak; C, shifts from strain or a solid solution. Footer: let the model read the main phases; check the small signals yourself. Source: Szymanski et al., Chemistry of Materials, 2021; newer models may do better.
