Kilkenny was never one place but several connected settlements. Irishtown, the Anglo-Norman Hightown, and the suburb of St John's were linked by bridges, roads and markets while retaining distinct identities still evident today

At the centre stood the Tholsel. Located near Crokker's Cross, where High St, Patrick St and Rose Inn Str converged, the Tholsel functioned as courthouse, treasury, council chamber and custom house.

Between cathedral and castle, a planned town emerged.
The Hightown was organised around High Street, with regularly laid-out burgage plots extending behind properties towards the town wall. Many of today's narrow lanes and property boundaries still reflect this medieval layout.

The cathedral stands on a hill above the Nore within the footprint of an earlier ecclesiastical enclosure. Today's curving streets, including Vicar St, Dean St & St Canice's Place, trace parts of this early medieval boundary before the Anglo-Norman arrival

Before the Anglo-Normans arrived, Kilkenny was an important ecclesiastical settlement centred on St Canice's & the crossing point of the River Nore.
The creation of a second urban core followed that transformed Kilkenny into medieval Ireland's leading inland city

🏘️ Heute besuchen wir #Langweiler. Klingt nicht gerade nach Action. 😴

Mit #Langeweile hat der Name wohl nichts zu tun: 1276 wurde der Ort als „Langvilre“ erwähnt, später als „Landweiler“, vermutlich nach einem Franken namens Lando.
