Coastal erosion doesn’t always have to be spectacular. On a warm windy day like today a steady trickle of sand from Red Crag over London Clay on an already eroded cliff at Bawdsey will eventually destabilise the blocks above. I stepped back!

These crumbling cliffs contain sands laid down in a shallow sea around 2 million years ago. Yet at Thorpeness, over 27m of cliff was lost in little more than a year by Jan 2026, forcing homes on North End Avenue to be demolished. #Thorpeness #Suffolk #Erosion

The battle endures
mother earth - in her kindness
yields to swelling tides
