“If you came hoping I would change my mind, you’re out of luck, Hades.” Her voice was too crisp—she didn’t care if he noticed. She stacked the parchments on her desk, then with a swish of her hand, they vanished into her pocket of aether. A handy creation for traveling. Resize their items and store it in their very own infinite satchel.

Hades stepped across her threshold. “In all our years serving the convocation, I believe this is the first time I’ve come to use that knock for you.” He stopped beside her, his golden gaze boring into the side of her head. “Leirion, think reason!” he implored. “This is the only way we can save our star.”

“I am thinking with reason, Hades.” She let the chill in her voice seep into his name. “But if your idea of preservation means sacrificing our population, then I want no part of it.”
