Prematurity was the compromise, the imperfect solution. It meant that, in order to make up for the loss of all that time of maturation in the womb which other species are afforded, we would have a longer time of abject helplessness after birth. This postnatal time of one year, comparable to the time our nearest relatives in Nature spend in the womb, would require careful, focused, and thoroughly all-encompassing care by the mothers or other caregivers. It would be accordingly exhausting and time intensive. This meant that needs of the infant could never be perfectly satisfied. Human mothers now needed also more expertise in child-caring than those in Nature. The knowledge and skill required could never be ideal. Indeed, there would be a gap in what the baby needed and what mothers could provide. Compared to Nature, human infants were needy, difficult, time-consuming, and frustrating in their being so helpless and so long to mature. This would have consequences for child abuse later on, but in the beginning it simply meant human mothers had a much greater and more difficult workload than their sisters in Nature. Thus, premature birth and narrower pelves — concomitant with bipedalism — won out. But what remains is something stronger. You see humanity in a new light. It is one that opens a door on a reality greater than the one humans have contrived for their benefit alone. In doing this, you are invited to a return to unity with Nature and a harmonious understanding of our role, perhaps our destiny, in the grand scheme of things. Central to all this is an acknowledgement and understanding of how we have come to set ourselves against Nature and all life on this planet. That is the starting point for a re-visioning of humans in Nature: We must begin with looking at the consequences of our estrangement. Certainly, as in any other process of revelation, seeing clearly allows an opportunity for transformation, whereas staying stuck in counterproductive habits of thought leads only to increasing stagnation of life process and a slow, though feverish, slide to death. Beyond that, vistas of larger possibilities for humanity abound. One might very well see their own destiny and future within them. To foresee a path for ourselves or humanity, requires not only a conceptualization of a possible goal, but an honest understanding of where we are in relation to it. It is to that, that we now turn. PREFACE Page xix …most elemental kind. Of course, rationalism has been proven incorrect in the social sphere as well ... witness the Tea Party and right wing rhetoric in general. The idea that humans are rational is now a joke. The idea that we are “God’s chosen species” and magically endowed with the senses and quality of those perceptions to see reality better than any other species that we even know of ... well, that would be a joke if the inherent arrogance in that were not so un-funny. This book goes a long way toward overturning these and many other biases we have — self-congratulatory prejudices humans have in looking out at Nature. You will be challenged and confronted to think differently about many things you thought were certain. Attitudes and habits of thought are undermined. But what remains is something stronger. You see humanity in a new light. It is one that opens a door on a reality greater than the one humans have contrived for their benefit alone.

Note on Human “Rationality” In response to the idea I often put forth that our sciences are not only anthropocentric but also built on a highly questionable theological position — a Judeo-Christian one — that we are “God’s chosen species” a reader commented, “Our science is built on Greek rationalism.” The implication is that the bases of our sciences, disregarding that the idea of dominion over Nature is central to religious as well as scientific thinking, is that science is “rational” ... hence, irrefutable, it would seem. My response is that this purported “rationality” of humans, and their sciences, was overturned long ago by Freud and later by the experiential psychotherapies. Even quantum physics demonstrates that we do not view the world at all purely “objectively” in even the most “objective” of sciences. Things create actions; items in the physi- cal world impel beings to do particular things in particular ways, simply by the fact of their existence. This is like saying that my rock garden ... I’ll even give you, the pattern of my rock garden ... conceivably makes me, want to or not, get up at 7am, make coffee, put particular and specific clothes on, and travel in a particular car, to a particular place, to engage all day in particular and precise actions, at a particular job. Why, how fantastic! Or, you might say, it is like our DNA are like gears in a magnifi- cent watch which, energy applied, results in all kinds of specific actions. However, this is looking at planetmates as things and objects — which is a byproduct of the objectification of Nature, wrought of our Newtonian-Cartesian dualism — which posits that the world is a machine with no consciousness. Disregarding for a minute the fact that that objectification of Nature is a mistake we make in our devolution from Nature through the process I am describing in this book, at least consider that reasoning has it that you do not exist either. Oh, your body exists, in this formulation, but you are not an experiencing being ... are you now? Hell, even mechanically you are reading these words with no consciousness or awareness in the mix!
