She was raised to be the next #orchardist. She would be in charge of the family's apple orchard. The botanists taught her how to take care of the trees, how to get rid of the bugs, and how to plant the next generation.
Then she became an adventurer, and left that behind.
The wanderer took out his compass. The needle swung wildly for a long moment. Finally it slowed, then stopped.
It pointed towards the south.
"The lands of eternal summer. Different from the cool autumn here. All right, time to go home."

"What does the autumn leaf say?"
The oracle narrowed her eyes. "It is no ordinary leaf, my lord. Look at the writing upon it."
"It's barely legible. That's why I'm asking YOU."
She sobered. "The winter snows sets its claws into your skin. Prepare accordingly."
"What will come out of the Equinox Gate this year?" The Queen asked as the day approached.
"We don't know, Your Majesty. It may be friendly, it may be evil. Even the seers cannot predict it."
"Make sure the precautions are in place, just in case."
"Yes, Your Majesty."
"Fill the #granary," the lord commanded. "Make sure they are as full as possible. The oracle predicts a harsh winter."
"It's still early in the autumn; the sun still warms the land, m'lord."
"Don't underestimate how fickle nature can be, Vizier. Follo9w my command."
"The botanists are helping to #harvest the fields," she said as she wiped sweat from her brow. "They're picking up seeds for the next season."
"Good." The wizard nodded sagely. "Have them bring them to my greenhouse. We can use magic to grow them and supplement the winter stores."

The autumn harvest queen wore a dress dyed bright #saffron. It was the colour of ripe pumpkins and of the setting sun on the horizon. All eyes were drawn to her, as the reddish leaves swirled around her feet in the wind. She smiled and cast her magic.
The guardian went among the rows of fruits and vegetables. She pulled up carrots for the bunnies, apples for the magical steeds, and lettuce for the various creatures of the forest. They all flocked to her garden for their fill. She loved her job and wouldn't change it for the world.
"What's happening to the stars?"
The astronomer consulted his tomes, but they yielded no answers. "Are more of them disappearing?"
"Yes, we saw fewer last night. It started at the beginning of this month."
"Then we should consult the sages. Something mystical is going on."
An ivory airplane
vanishes arcanely
then reappears sanguinely,
under umber horizon
vineyard is picked clean,
beside a table built with precision
quietly bearing unsent letters
let them drift with winds
bringing peace

The queen's #copper hair shone in the sun, her deep green eyes like spring leaves. Her pale skin represented winter, but a rosy sheen reminded the courtiers of summer.
She was of all seasons, a mage of earth and sky, sun and water. They all lived in awe of her great power.
The forest wasn't a pure red. The leaves were more of a dark #russet brown, a sign of a dying land parched with thirst. The rangers sighed and prepared to leave. It was time to move to more verdant grounds for the spring. Their survival depended on it.
The golden leaf drifted on the wind. It took its time before it landed on the hard, cold ground. The red-orange forest shook like an earthquake and the rest of the leaves immediately dropped to the ground.
It whispered, "Winter is coming..."
