I wrote about this in my piece about Mamdani, and these arguments really resonate with me. There are not multiple, separate, independent struggles. US policy for decades has been subjugation, oppression, and extraction. It’s happened in the hollowing out of cities, the destruction of family farms, the selling out of manufacturing workers, and military strikes across the globe. The extraction of wealth from pension systems, healthcare, and home mortgages, and by stealing resources from other countries. The opposition only knows they hate all of us, and want to destroy everything that has made our society possible. The sooner we realize that, the better our chances of responding.

Ultimately, Mamdani was the antidote to the idea that you can be "progressive except for Palestine." Not because your position on Palestine is a purity test, and not because we all must prioritize that issue above all else (especially in an election with no foreign policy component), but because just like Mamdani’s platform intentionally tied together all the major issues, Palestine is not its own issue, it’s part of his integrated platform.

It’s in that framing that there is not an accounting of everything, amongst which Palestine is just yet another issue. Palestine is every issue, and every issue is Palestine. Because the police violence, depriving children of the food (needed to grow much less live), ICE kidnapping people off the street, dropping bombs on schools and wedding parties across the globe, the unhoused, mental health, healthcare, all the polycrises, are present in Gaza, the West Bank, and across Palestine, just as they’re all happening or being debated in the US.

So there simply isn’t room to try to argue there’s some sort of separation or line. ICE is shooting fathers with their kid in the car. Cops are shooting babies in the car with their mothers. The IDF is shooting babies and kids in cars in Gaza and the West Bank.

$We’re disappearing people off the streets, holding them in detention for months and years, while family, and even their lawyers, can’t find them and don’t know if they’re alive. They’re detained for paperwork issues, for minor infractions, or even just the color of their skin. We send children to immigration judges with no representation, and hide behind the idea we gave them “due process.” In Palestine, children are arrested for throwing stones or blocking roads when occupation forces invade their villages or refugee camps. They are never charged, held under administrative detention that can be renewed forever. Families can’t visit them because they’re held in territory where the apartheid regime doesn’t allow them to travel to. It’s the same people, driving the same system, directing their oppression and attacks against whoever is the biggest threat that week. It’s Whack-a-Mole. That’s why there’s no overarching values or principles, because the US political bubble has none, other than hoarding money and holding on to power. That’s not how you win, it’s how you grind away, year after year, continuing to alienate everyone around you, while preserving your fever dream of surviving the ultimate downfall by hoarding more and more wealth. One last thing from the Mamdani piece. My regular reminder that I think a good test if you’re doing good writing is if your own words make you cry.$

But when I was reading through the piece again after the editor made some edits, I got to this paragraph:

It’s women’s rights, because of the dead mothers, the dead children, so many dead children. Girls murdered who will never grow up to become women. Fathers kidnapped off the street, held for decades without formal charges, never getting to meet their unborn daughter before they grow to become mothers themselves, or are vaporized before they can escape childhood. Mothers who must mourn multiple children all at once, after collecting bits and pieces in a bag to bury. And those are the “lucky” ones, because they didn’t die in childbirth because of a blockade on medical supplies, or see their babies killed before they could even get a birth certificate.

I had basically forgotten it since my brain had dumped it to the page, and when I was re-reading it now, it made me cry. I wrote these phrases with that intention, “so many dead children,” “vaporized,” “escape childhood,” but at the same time, these words can’t even begin to capture the atrocities we continue to fund, supply, and, in West Orange, and NJ, fight to keep people from talking about.
