“Only a minute,” muttered Quimmik, catching up. “I seek a bride for Chief Bear in exchange for an alliance with our tribe.”
“Splendid! I trust you will secure the border on your way out of Huxen territory.”
“We are also concerned about the Cat tribe’s movements on your border, but the Bear cannot fight them alone, not within the terms of our treaty.”
“Your Northman tribes fight each other all the time. Let both sides weaken before they turn again to Huxen.”
“The Cat tribe has a new leader, who draws the Hawk, Wolf, and Seal tribes under him. A leader with a god-soul, but not driven out onto the tundra after his year is up.” Quimmik kissed the tassel on his tribal mantal. “Without a god-soul of our own, the Bear tribe will be crushed.”
“Your god-souls are demons. May demons eat your Chief. Your minute is up.” Lualih gestured Lady Juho to the royal ready room.
