Private Peter Black (s/n 6744 and 2120) Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) 1st/7th Bn. served in the military before the war. He had served in France since Apr 1915 but had deserted twice and was AWOL for a month. He was executed on Sep 18 1916 near the border between France and Belgium, with 'C' Company witnessing the event.

Although the Somme was the scene of bitter fighting during the second half of 1916, those offending on its battlefields were often dealt with elsewhere. Nine soldiers were executed in September 1916 yet only one third faced firing squads near the Somme battlefront. Private Peter Black was an example of a soldier shot elsewhere. A private in the Black Watch (probably enlisted pre-war, as he had a previous army
number of 2120), he was serving in 51 Highland Division
- a division in which the sanction of the death penalty would seem to have been less arbitrary than in other formations. Private Black's record and offence had all
the ingredients of a deserving case, although he had served in France since April 1915.84 For a previous offence of desertion the soldier had received a sentence of death which had been suspended. Consequently, a subsequent offence committed prior to going into action, coupled with an absence of over one month, was unlikely to attract sympathetic attention.85 The battalion war diary recorded that on the day prior to execution the sentence was promulgated on parade at 6 pm. The next morning, near the border between France and Belgium, 'C' Company was witness to the tragic event.86
