Don't have "pulse", but I do have "heartbeat" as Iluaneh is using her healing magic to detect it.
No actual spoilers included, even though this has some significance to the plot.
#WIPSnips #writing #writingcommunity #writesky

The entire village seemed to have converged on the road before Onisimu came, running frantically and elbowing his way between the onlookers. Iluaneh expected him to be the same collected. detached healer he had always been, and he was anything but As soon as his eves fell on the corpse, his iaw went slack and he went down on his knees, putting trembling hands over the boy
"Is he dead?" someone asked callously in the back of the crowd
"Dead?" someone else repeated, with dread rising in their voice and rippling through everyone assembled in the road
Iluaneh was standing close enough to extend a tread of magic to detect a heartbeat. There wasn't one. She could sense the rapid pounding in the chests of the physician, the mother, the father--but nothing from the ashen-faced boy. His red hair was like a flame atop his lifeless body. And the flames were now the only thing that awaited him

Ata is a child so I'm going to talk about Sir Corbyn. I think what he looks for in others is clarity. His former master, Sir Myrddin is a wise man. While Ata is exceptionally perceptive. Grief clouds his eyes.

Art of Sir Corbyn Findlay by Nushdeco.

An older man with a grey beard and hair holding a raven. He has a black cape accented in white and a dark grey and black gambeson also accented in white. His pebble brown eyes look mournfully at the bird. The background is a pale green with a darker circle behind him decorated with start like patterns. A watermark in the corner reads "NushDeco".

From "Unifier: The Seven Labors of the White-Haired Woman"

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

He raised his gun. “I’m just gonna shoot you.”
“Yeah, but if you stand that close...”
Her blade flashed out, the edge of it striking the barrel of his gun.
As soon as her weapon made impact, his exploded. A ragged pulse of energy shot out in all directions, not strong enough to take anyone off their feet, but certainly enough to stagger them. Even the queen, who rapidly patted the sparking embers that landed on her poncho.
“…I can do that,” Val finished. “And your gun shouldn’t have exploded like that.”
It was unlikely the man who’d attempted to shoot her could hear her. She couldn’t tell if he, laid out on the floor, was even conscious, but if he was, he’d likely be in too much pain. Plus, an explosion that close to his ears couldn’t be good for them.
“Oh.” As her gloved hands finished smothering the sparks that’d misted her person, she marveled at the unburned material that still slightly smoldered. “This thing’s fireproof. That’s handy.”
She looked around the place at the panicked crew, cowering against the far walls.
“Okay. Anyone have a real strong desire to be next?”

Admiral Calder knows the pulse of a ship and that dry land has none. He would rather face squalls and storms at sea than answer a new queen’s summons at the palace.

From QUEEN FOR A DAY, a finished fantasy novel.

Chapter 6
Eighteenth Ring
(Noontime - The Day After Queen Disaya’s Death)

Calder detested dry land. It lacked rhythm and held no sense of flow. Yes, it offered vistas that could steal a man’s breath: cliffs and forests and sky enough to make poets of sailors, yet it remained resolute. Unmoving. A beautiful kind of wrong.

Nothing compared to the ocean’s rocking, the familiar argument between hull and wave. Nothing beat the feel of waterlogged timbers beneath his bare feet at sea, boards breathing up through his soles as if the ship itself had a pulse.

Like countless seafarers before him, Admiral Calder had always been enamored with the stars glittering overhead, indifferent beacons to those upon land who kept their gaze transfixed on one foot in front of the other. Now here he was, dragged ashore and summoned to meet with the queen no less. As much as he admired Cobeah, enough to feel a private pride in her rise, he wanted nothing more than to turn around and chase salt wind back to open water.

Even sailors, who’ve weathered the worst the world can imagine, know there’s no good reason to remain upon the shore.

Hope that when the group reads ch5 they'll understand the character motivation better and there won't be any more victim blaming or telling me that im portrayin victims wrong (im literally writing from my own experience :D). Sometimes victims react in "unfavorable" ways, shocker

And this, friends, is exactly why we're not letting Rein negotiate with supernatural entities anymore.

That poor devil would have been suckered into helping him for free because Rein would accidentally spend three hours explaining the symbolism behind it.
