#StetChat | Hi! @teneshalcurtis.bsky.social here, chiming in from Atlanta, Georgia!
I spend my days helping writers with just about all aspects of their authorship: illustrations, dev edits, cover design, book design, promotions, book coaching, etc. Glad to join in today! ♥
I’m participating in #StetChat from western Washington today. I have been a freelance editor since 1989 and have recently become quite selective with the projects I take on. Typically in the humanities, in English and Spanish.

A1c: Honestly, this was one of the most stressful projects I ever worked on, and I hated not being able to trust the author. It didn’t help that they stole text that was racist, sexist, and outdated. Or that I was editing a PDF, which took twice as long to work with. #StetChat 3/3
A1b: They asked me to keep editing but to also note every instance that Copyscape flagged. I was to leave those sections alone. Which is what I did. At this point, I had a good handle on the author’s voice, so it was pretty easy for me to spot sections that didn’t sound like them. #StetChat 2/3
A1a: Something like this happened to me with a nonfiction title. I found two or three portions that weren’t properly credited or cited. I immediately contacted the publisher and asked what I should do. #StetChat 1/3
Hi #StetChat! I'm Barbie Halaby (she/her). I offer editing and proofreading services to indie authors and university presses. I've been editing for 24 years, but I know I have something new to learn here.
Looking forward to the #StetChat!
Q1 part 2: ... Then you run the entire manuscript through Copyscape and discover 11 more instances of plagiarism. What do you do?
Q1 part 1: You’re editing a manuscript for a publisher and encounter a sentence that feels…off. Suspicious, you run the paragraph through Copyscape (a plagiarism checker) and find that the sentence was copied word for word from a website. ...
