Fascinating and well informed article, although going in to many directions. I still wonder how you could make responsible AI that "gives a damn" about death without itself being aware of its own mortality. #PhilSky #PhilSci #AIEthics

Jane Addams birthday week final post, this time in response to the accusation that she advocated "peace at any price":

"What we desire is peace at once, and a peace founded on justice and law."

Here she is (3rd from left) en route to war-torn Europe in 1915, ready to argue for peace.

Over the past few weeks I've been building Ipsissima, a free and open-source tool for argument mapping. What began as an experiment with Claude has turned into something you may find genuinely useful — if you're a philosopher or a lawyer, or just read arguments. 🧵 jgsw.github.io/ipsissima/ #philsky

Everyone talks about #AI existential risk—doomsayers & skeptics alike—but closer philosophical scrutiny of these arguments is long overdue. Swoboda & colleagues take up that challenge in their recent 📄, offering an analysis of three skeptical arguments: 🔗👇 link.springer.com/article/10.1... #philsky

From the new issue:

The Many Problems of Spacetime Emergence in Quantum Gravity
– Rasmus Jaksland & Kian Salimkhani

Abstract in alt text or read it here:

ABSTRACT. We argue that what is discussed in philosophy under the umbrella of spacetime emergence in fact consists of a plethora of different problems. We advocate casting such debates in terms of the emergent spatiotemporal aspects, as already happens in physics. We then argue against three ways to reject our call for specificity: the many distinct philosophical problems relating to the emergence of the various spatiotemporal aspects do not suggest any singular, overarching, or exceptional problem of spacetime emergence. We also discuss how the objections are reflected by five conceptions of spacetime and we observe that different spatiotemporal aspects are emergent in the different quantum gravity approaches, whereby investigating emergence in quantum gravity collectively is problematic. Finally, we illustrate how conducting the investigation at the level of specific spatiotemporal aspects aids philosophical inquiry.
