My front yard today. Over the last few years we have been ditching lawn and invasive plants and replacing them with native plants and trees. It amazes me how many new butterflies, birds, and animals we see. Don't be afraid to do it, even if just a little, in your yard.

This is my first year with bottle gentian in my yard and I’m so excited! It’s almost at peak. This flower never opens; bees have to squeeze their way in to get the nectar, and get covered in pollen in the process. Such a strange/fun adaptation.

An Oak Tree a Day
What is this? An oak with a curtain? What is it hiding? Just an understory for nurturing those little acorns that hope to grow into trees someday. Acorn collecting season! More on them in the ALT. California #nativePlants #nature

A very large oak tree with long thin strands of deadwood covering one side to hide what is underneath. There is a coyote brush with lime green new leaves in the foreground along with other native plants. The sky is blue with a few white clouds. The view from underneath the tree shows the curtain branches with several young oak saplings popping up. Showing the structure of this tree with a strong V shape surrounded by a duff layer of dried leaves. Acorn on a book. If you want to plant an oak, collect dropped acorns now. Choose brown ones where the cap is easily removed. To check viability, soak for 24 hours, if it floats, throw it out. This is a valley oak acorn & they get HUGE so make sure that you have plenty of room.

#NativePlants Elephantopus carolinianus on the shady side of the Parkway proves there are great choices to keep color & #pollinators food going through late season even in woodland gardens with dry soil.

Meaningful rain finally! My new plantings need it so bad. We’re getting close to an inch & it’s still coming down. Our soil was *so* dry. While we stay inside, here is the beautiful #NativePlants Ageratina altissima (White Snakeroot).

As an ecologist, I focused on propagating the complete suite of native plant species needed for ecosystem restoration, not just the ones that sell. This meant offering rare plants that others wouldn't touch, which eventually led to unique customers across Canada. #ecology #restoration #nativeplants

My Lanceleaf Coreopsis bloomed for the first time this June, and I'm still getting new blossoms! A great native species for a new gardener like me.
