Pugs. In bas-relief. On a t-shirt. Just as the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans intended.

Ottonian art truly solidified its powerful, hieratic aesthetic during the 10th and 11th centuries. Moving away from softer Carolingian styles, these works redefined medieval power and visual authority. #ArtHistory

Drawing is thinking with your hands. Painting is remembering with your eyes. Inventing is both, plus a willingness to be wrong in public.

In Praise of Italy by David Ligare, 1987, Private Collection

#ArtHistory #ContemporaryArt #HyperRealism

Ligare has noted that while the painting praises the Italian landscape—using a hilltop background inspired by Urbino and Piero della Francesca—the foreground rock is actually based on a real rock he found in California between the Salinas Valley and the San Joaquin Valley. It reflects his style of blending classical Mediterranean ideals with the landscape of his home in Monterey, California.

Ligare captures the serene beauty of the Italian countryside with stunning precision. Painted in 1987, this work exemplifies Ligare's commitment to classica realism, depicting a harmonious blend of nature and architecture. The vibrant colors and meticulous details invite viewers to explore the lush scenery, contemplating the timeless connection between humanity and the landscape This piece celebrates the enduring beauty and cultural richness of ltaly inviting admiration from art enthusiasts worldwide.

September's theme: Labor
BORIS GORELICK (1911 - 1984), “Sweat Shop”, c. 1935. Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Arkansas US. Gorelick was born in Russia and emigrated to the United States when just a baby.
#arthistory #art #Labor #NYC

Here is another print (this one a lithograph) created under the auspices of the WPA (Works Progress Administration) during the Great Depression, when the government stepped in to offer employment to artists who were unemployed (or underemployed). Gorelick was born in Russia and emigrated to the United States when just a baby. He championed the downtrodden in his artwork and advocated for social justice as a political agitator. “Sweat Shop” shines a harsh light on the oppressive and exploitative conditions found in the garment industry in New York City, where (mostly) women toiled in cramped conditions for long hours and little pay. His print is filled with exhausted faces, sewing machines and burdened seamstresses. The garish lighting suggests work being done at night. A headless (soulless) mannikin stands to the left, surrounded by faces that look like masks. The mask/faces, skewed perspectives (the round stool top beneath the most central sewing machine is tipped so far that it looks like a hole in the ground) and fragmented details are evidence that Gorelick was familiar with Cubism; the dreamlike atmosphere with bits of walls and doors and railroad tracks in the background point to his interest in Surrealism. All of these disjointed details are crammed into one claustrophobic scene, intensifying the drudgery and hardships endured by the women working. It is a scene that demands attention; it is art pushing for social change.

By Okada Saburōsuke (1869-1939), Portrait of a Lady, 1907, oil, 733x615 cm, Artizon Museum, Tokyo. #arthistory #oilpainting #painting #japaneseart #asianart More info in ALT.

From the museum: “Okada Saburosuke won first prize at the 1907 Tokyo Industrial Exhibition for this painting, which initially was entitled Study in Purple, a reference to the purple cords that lace the drum. The woman wearing a Genroku-style kimono and her hair in a chignon seem about to strike the drum. In the background is a Rimpa-style folding screen with a design of fringed pinks and flowing water. This painting was commissioned by Takahashi Yoshio, who was involved in the management of Mitsukoshi Drapery Store and had touched off the Genroku motif boom. The subject is his wife, Chiyoko. This familiar painting was used in a poster for the Mitsukoshi’s Spring New Pattern Show and later as a postage stamp.”

Woman with an Umbrella by Marie Bracquemond, 1880, Private Collection

#ArtHistory #ModernArt

#Impressssionism

For more on this artist: www.artandobject.com/articles/mar...

We are presented with a female figure holding an open umbrella. The umbrella, rendered in a soft shade of pink, casts a gentle shadow over the woman, indicating a source of light from above. The figure herself is depicted in a full-length profile, gazing downward with an air of introspective calm. She is dressed in the fashion of the era, with a striped blouse adorned with a red ribbon and a multi-tiered skirt that conveys a sense of movement. The pastel color palette and the loose, flowing brushstrokes are characteristic of the Impressionist style, seeking to capture the transient effects of light and atmosphere. The background is minimalist and does not distract from the figure, allowing the observer to focus on the subtle interplay of light, shade, and texture that gives life to the subject. Overall, the artwork exudes an elegance and a tranquility that is emblematic of Bracquemond’s contributions to the Impressionist genre.

This was her final painting. She quit painting due to her husband's jealousy. He was also an artist.

In 1856, Gustave Courbet turned a scene of bourgeois leisure into something almost defiant. Young Ladies Beside the Seine (Summer) asks us to see rest as a kind of refusal. Does it feel more like escape or rebellion to you?
