Letters from France to the UK took around two days, but between four to eight weeks to Australia.

Mail went via the censors, over to UK, sorted, then loaded onto ships. Ships full of mail could be sunk, or otherwise lost, meaning agonising waits for loved ones at home

Here is an outstanding essay that a soldier wrote to "The Nation." It was published in the 21/10/1916 issue on pp. 104-106. This was a frank and realistic oped from the trenches to the living rooms of British homes. #WW1 #FWW #WesternFront #BritishArmy #Tommy #History

Vera Brittain writes ‘I went to tea with Miss Fry. I found myself telling Miss Fry about Roland Leighton, though I spoke rather of him than of any connection with him, & did not make myself appear as interested in him as I really am.’

Roland Leighton to Vera Brittain ‘Only away on our left in the French area we could hear what is even at a distance the most terrifying thing on earth–the pounding of heavy guns, now fainter, now louder, but coalescing always into one dull, thundering roar'
