Poem text by Kate LaDew:

a few sandwiches short of a picnic

but we'll make do
I tear our lonely sandwich in half
and give one half to you
the ants stay away, out of pity, no doubt,
so we lie on the grass, stare up at the sky,
and begin to count,
one dragon,
one unicorn,
one crocodile,
one whale,
two dolphins,
three elephants,
four pirate ships setting sail,
imagination slides slow slow slow across the blue,
if we spent our whole lives counting clouds
I think that would be enough for me and you

Mummification

Valour had set sail by the time silver moonlight poured through the window. This spineless sycophant did not even say goodbye.

"Poltroon!"

- He thought, quailing, weary of desire's dreams. Trying to stay awake, he still hoped this grail would pass, tonight. Until he grew weary of hope. Then he grew weary of being awake, too.

The moment he had fallen asleep, Lily rode into the room on a silver ray. She smiled at the sight of this perfectly imperfect human.

Tonight, she did not come to snack.
Tonight, she would come to feast.

Her lips made the gentlest contact with his. Docile, his tongue answered to hers, longingly. Her kiss deepened softly until she got a hard response. Then she rode him. Long. Passionately. Come again? Of course. Harder, each time.

He earned every wrinkle...

Branches brushed lightly against the window at dawn. Right before the sunrise's gold poured into the room. It is rarely spoken of, but the morning does have a sense for elegant morbidity.

shrouded in darkness
lapped in a swirl of light
I sail across
the midnight sky
looking for the parts of me
the hurricane scattered away

I have searched
every shore
but the only place
I have not looked
is the eye

Under Whelm

Dark wet air keeps its distance,
badly.
Windows tremble
without admitting why.
A sail lifts
half-remembering a boat.
Breath draws a lung full of coastline,
grit misfiled in the inhale.
The horizon miscounts itself,
twice,
the sky spits
a harsh,
unfinished
word.

she wakes a little farther
from where she lay down

if #sailing through life was considered easy

we'd all be living in a mansion on the ocean
dining from a buffet filled with lavish treats
& sipping dry champagne
while a trio plays soft music in the background
as guests play botchy ball on the lawn

oh wait one already exists #vss365

& she wonders
if the luminescent sky
will hear her poetic yearnings
on this beautiful stella night
where the stars are never shy
but pirouette to whispering wishes
& as moonstruck
glimmering waves
dance on the shore of dreams
she casts love verses
~ to sail ~
deep into his heart

Old #sailors warn against trusting calm water too quickly.

A sea can flatten into glass only moments before a #hurricane.

The wise use quiet conditions not for celebration but for adjustment, repair and careful observation.

A detail from a Modigliani portrait, portraying an old man and suggesting the sea.

Sailing by?

Sailing by?

I don't like the sea
All wet and cold and salty
Too deep to sail on

It doesn't stay still
Although it quite often remains
Where you last saw it

The ship
Roams the
Broken Hearts
Of
The White Dwarf's
Far flung
Spinning globes

Their sails
Patched
In black tides
Of treason

They sing
The echoes
Of Treasure
From a Captain's
Cosmic plunder

Tinker boy,
Marvels
At the
Constellation's wonder

my photo of sunrise over the solent with a yacht leaving harbour

poem -
Lone yacht, new sail to fly
On fresh waves of devotion
Riding the tides of emotion
Where it sees the sea's caress
Just sailing by...

it took a while to process it. Anna’s mother had been a love child between Nana and a Munich artist. When the storm inside her quieted, Anna felt something shift as if the letters had unmoored her. She now had to sail forward in her life with the knowledge Nana had left behind.

It started as a black smear and grew into a monster.

A ghost ship needed no sail.

It wasn't moved by wind or anything natural.

What drove it most of all was greed and a desire for mayhem.

Today, your #vss365 #prompt is #sail
