It’s usually a big challenge to spot bitterns at the local nature reserve apart from when they fly around. No hides, a big reserve & lots of likely hiding places you can’t even see. But on Wednesday morning last week this bittern was sunbathing and standing out in the rising sun and so less than it’s usual camouflage. In this shot it was perched upright way above the waterline with its head up looking to its right and the left of the scene. As I watched it would turn its head left and right and back again soaking in the rays - amazing and such a pleasure to watch!

Red Kite
A barn owl on a stump, both of which are slightly diagonal, with the owl staring down to it’s left and the right of the scene looking for prey. The background is a blurred mix of greens and it was a bit windy at the time.

A close up photograph of a Colletes hederae (Ivy bee) actively foraging on a cluster of Ivy flowers. She is seen in side profile with her body facing left and her head lowered toward the tiny flower florets as she feeds. The bee features a prominent, densely furry thorax covered in vibrant, light orange-brown and buff hairs. The bee's long abdomen extends to the right, showing a striking pattern of bright cream-yellow rings contrasting sharply with glossy dark brown/black segments. Bright yellow pollen is packed heavily onto her rear hind legs. The flower head beneath her forms a dense, rounded dome made up of dozens of tightly grouped, pale green flower buds. Several tiny, delicate stamens with yellowish tips protrude upward from the cluster. The background is blurred in shades of yellow and teal.

A Clouded Yellow, a yellow butterfly, on a yellow hawkbit flower in the sun
Three Swallow chicks in a line in centre of picture. All three with beaks wide open that are yellow with a touch of orange at the back of their throats. There plumage is black and they are inside a specially made nesting. Above them are wooden panels that are on the underside of the buildings roof, which is the cafe at RSPB Bempton Cliffs.
