Hopefully it won't happen! It's quite possible that you might not encounter it. #StetChat
Hi #StetChat
I'm Jesse (he/him), developmental and line editor. I specialise in speculative fiction (including horror), romance (spicy or not), and queer fiction. I work on both adult and YA manuscripts.
#StetChat is always a good use of my time!
Hi #StetChat I'm Steph, a nonbinary & neurodivergent editor.
I edit fiction, mostly LGBTQ+ fiction and SFF for indie authors. I mainly focus on line editing and copyediting.
A1: cry? 😭
I’d double-check the website first, then raise it with the publisher once I’m certain of my facts.
A1: In recent years, I had another nonfiction proofread that had sentences copied and pasted from websites. I flagged it to the editor, and he took it seriously and brought it up with the author. I think they likely changed the wording/added citations, but I'm not sure.
Hi, #StetChatters in the #StetChat. I'm Sharon Kaplan. I am the owner and sole proprietor of Good Catch Editing. I specialize in nonfiction, journalism, and STEM topics.
Hi Holly! Happy to have you along for another #StetChat.
A1 (2/2): Still, I ended up having to rework/reedit so much of that book that it was the first step of my off-ramp with that packager. I feel much better about such things when the decision of how to move forward is in my hands. #StetChat
A1 (1/2): This happened to me probably more than a decade ago, and it wasn't even a plagiarism checker. It was just spidey sense + googling. Luckily, I was working with a packager, so I handed it off to them to deal with the author. #StetChat
Aww! Tell them I also say hi, and to take turns at the feeder. (Chickadees, unlike starlings, know how to take turns.) #StetChat
Hi #StetChat! I'm M.A., an editor in the midwest. Actually caught the chat on time for today and looking forward to lots of 😱 about today's topic.
A1: This has happened to me many times LOL
It happened on my first book I freelance copyedited. I Copyscaped the entire chapter, found several more instances of plagiarism (of other websites and self-plagiarism), & told the managing editor. Her response? Didn't care.
I quit the project.
Hi Irene! Glad you could make it to another session. #StetChat
A1: Contact the production or managing editor at the publisher. Depending on their policy, they might stop the project or ask you to flag each instance of plagiarism. You won't know unless you ask. #StetChat
Hi Rachel! The yard chickadees say hi too! #StetChat
Hi #StetChat – Suzanne here, non-fiction editor in the UK. I was at the CIEP conference at the weekend and am doing ACES VCon too, so am getting a bit conferenced out! So many good tips pouring into my brain!
