Stella presented her proper English sticky toffy pudding, and Lucy stared at it bewildered. “What you call pudding, Miss Graham, is simply custard,” Stella had declared. Beverly knew the longer they spent together, the more likely she was to say something regrettable. That’s just how she was around Clara; her mouth moved before her brain could catch up. Perhaps Lucy and Cèilidh were right about how she behaved around Clara. Then again, everyone else in the book club seemed to have seen right through her, so why hadn’t Clara?
