“I’m going to borrow this for a bit.”
Val gripped the door frame of the aged truck and hoisted herself towards the driver’s seat.
“Uh, I don’t think so.” The old couple’s son had followed her out to the dirt path that passed for a driveway. His daughter wasn’t far behind.
“I’ll bring it right back.”
“No one gave you permission…”
Val scoffed as she paused her movement into the cab. “What, you’re worried I’m going to steal it? Trust me, I don’t need your broken down old truck.”
Her eyes fell on the young girl.
“No offense.”
“I’ve got no reason to trust you.”
Still looking to his daughter, Val asked, “Do you trust me?”
The girl nodded.
“That doesn’t mean anything. She’s a kid. She’d trust a wolf to guard sheep if it asked nicely.”
“Hey!” the girl protested.
“Besides, it’s not her truck.”
Val looked to the child again. “You mean this isn’t yours?” The girl smiled and shook her head. “You’re honestly telling me you’ve never driven this truck before?” Another shake. “You want to?”
The girl excitedly ran for the vehicle. Her father had to reach down and scoop her up before she could clamber up to the driver’s seat.

The scenery is post-apocalyptic, and the weather is Sacramento Valley hot. Nothing grows here, not so much as a determined little weed. I’ve seen weeds pushing through concrete in the real world, which means this place is more dead than a parking lot.
A craggy ditch stained with long, slobbery streaks of dried gray sludge runs parallel to where I’m walking. Since I’m not currently being attacked, I decide to check it out.

Text: A Sylvan Tale #WIPSnips "pass"

As the days began to pass after the wedding, Nin did not yearn for her former betrothed as much as she thought she would have. Having heard upon returning from Ashular that Alan had broken their engagement to marry Willow instead, Nin thought she would be pining the rest of her days for Alan. But quickly, Alan became a distant memory, even though he still lived in the same village as before. Nin now wondered if she had never been in love with Alan, but more in love with the thought of being married.

Cassie opened the actor door on the other side of the shuddering prop. “Fire!” She waved at the group. “Come on, out the next door marked Emergency Exit.”
The woman moaned another prayer. Cassie locked eyes with the young boy at the woman’s side. “Fuego. Sigue andando, nunca pares. Fuego!” The boy nodded and scampered past, while the woman followed with outstretched arms in a useless attempt to catch him.
Cassie brought the radio mic to her mouth and sent the message that would terrify Security.  “Cassie to Security. Fire in the house. Repeat, fire in the house.”
“Quit effin around, Cassie. I found your clown’s hoodlums,” replied Hank.
Cassie ground her teeth. “You can’t have pissed off all the ladies at dispatch. Make the call.”
“Copy. Fire in the house. Call the FD and coordinate evac.” A moment of silence passed before he continued with a break in his voice, “Kyle, get the friggin house lights on.”
Cassie followed the thickening smoke down the hallway, ignoring the jostling fridge. Tendrils of fumes twisted into her lungs. Stumbling, she flopped spread-eagle against something warm, soft, and furry. Convincing screams blared from the speaker in pitch black. A limb squirmed under her hip. Abruptly, the speakers stopped, leaving her ears ringing in the muffled quiet. Dim lights pierced the smoke.
