I can only imagine! #StetChat
I immediately notify the editor. When this happened at an academic journal they pulled the article. Turns out it had been previously published in another country. #StetChat
Very true! Your DM and my DM would probably get along well.
Also, yes, sometimes running away or firing a client may be the right move depending on the circumstances.
Q2: You’ve already politely told a potential client that you’re not a good fit to edit their project and directed them to an editing directory. They email back and demand to know why you won’t work on it. What do you do?
Happy to be back! Although joining after a full day at #ACESVcon26 means I've got limited brain power right now, so any #StetChat responses will be slow and likely full of typos. What a day!😊
#StetChat | A1: Just clear communication on this one. Once I've given notice about what I've found, it's up to the author / publisher how they want to proceed with their own project.
I want to at least say I hope you got paid well, but I am willing to bet you did not. 🙃 #StetChat
Yay! We're so glad you think so, Barbie. I know that I've learned a lot from you over the years.
My DM once said "Running away is always an option," and I suppose that applies quite well to red-flag clients too! #StetChat
It was a wiiiiild situation. It was a Christian publishing house and they gaslit the shit out of me. "Why would you accuse our authors of plagiarism? We're family!" (They are literally not my family...lol.)
Argh, that had to be frustrating. Did they ever argue with you or deny it? #StetChat
#StetChat Other people have said this, but luckily, since this is a publisher's manuscript, that makes it their problem. I would run it up to whoever's managing the project and ask how they want to proceed. I suppose it would also depend on what stage of the project I was at. 1/2
That's a great point, Ellen (and hi! Happy to have you here.). You need to be careful not to run to accuse your client of plagiarism as there could be another explanation. #StetChat
A1: If I discover plagiarism, I check the entire book. There's ALWAYS more than one instance of it. 🙃
Then I email the managing editor / author directly.
I explain that content is showing up as duplicated from [source], and do we want to:
1. Reword it
2. Make it a direct quote & cite it
Ugh. I'm so sorry that's how you entered freelance copyediting! Good for you for determining your own boundaries early on. #StetChat
Crying is a free action, as our DM once said during one of our D&D sessions.
