I stopped beneath this concrete shell the way one stops beneath a sky shifting in mood, seeking not so much the market itself as the way its curve cuts through the air with an almost animal-like naturalness. I wanted my gaze to glide, unimpeded, from the dark grain of the brick toward that orange mass that seems to breathe, all the way to that streak of yellow that holds everything together like a visible seam. There was in that unadulterated light a kind of raw serenity—the kind found in places that have outlived their era without trying to please, and that still bear the somewhat naïve boldness of those who built them. Royan offered me that: a fragment of postwar utopia, still standing, still stubbornly holding onto its geometry. Taken in broad daylight, during a stop along the coast, in that particular state of mind where one seeks less to photograph a monument than to capture a fleeting moment of its structure—an almost childlike exercise in geometric contemplation in the face of architecture rebuilt amid the urgency and hope of the 1950s.
