On my 9-5 commute Coffee steeping in the left hand My eyes gaze out on the right I notice the changes, like freckled skin I didn't know I had Little wrinkles on the city written in Decomposition I remember when they put the Health Line down Euclid Julie, our High School English teacher Shepherding our black Montessori wool Into long silver metal caterpillars A marvel of geometric design and function. A restaurant sat there at this plaza, gone now The hunger for development moved elsewhere. I remember a coffee shop in Terminal Tower, beginning and ending. A candy shop on the ground floor. Sweet memories of a fountain I once tossed pennies into with my plastic mother, Now covered with polymer grass. All that's missing is the tacky flamingo. What's new are the tents. Hidden behind bushes, Or sitting plain in parks and fielded lanes. The one or two same homeless man, Replaced by a population Larger than my graduating class. Or do I just notice them more now? Glaring in front of me like the green eviction paper for a neighbor taped to the front door of my building. I have begun to wonder what are all these civic organizations for? They give pride to the rich While pretending to aid the poor.
