By Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975), The Twist, 1964, private collection. I found very little information about this painting, not unusual for works in private collections. One source did say the medium is oil on Masonite. More info in ALT. #arthistory #painting #oilpainting

A painting of a group of young white people dancing, doing the twist, as a man (maybe a bit brown?) plays a bongo.

From the artist’s obituary in The New York Times, January 20, 1975: ‘Mr. Benton was a painter of enormous talent who believed that only by turning art to meaningful subject matter could America have an art that was not a bald imitation of the symbolic and abstract paintings that were then the vogue in Europe…

With such fellow Midwesterners as John Steuart Curry and Grant Wood, Mr. Benton became a practitioner of what became known in the Thirties as “regionalism.” It was a time when the nation concentrated on its own image. The regionalists’ art mirrored what the majority of Americans had in mind— America itself.’

September's theme: Labor
BEN SHAHN (1898 - 1969), “Welders”, 1943. Museum of Modern Art, New York City US.
Ben Shahn said, “I paint two things: what I love and what I abhor”.
#arthistory #art #Labor #BenShahn

Ben Shahn said, “I paint two things: what I love and what I abhor”. He loved and championed hard work and the disenfranchised; he hated injustice and oppression. Immigrants were dear to his heart, being an immigrant himself as a child (with his family) from Lithuania in 1906. He painted in the Social Realism style, embracing real life and pushing ideas that aligned with his personal leftist outlook. During the Great Depression, he worked for the WPA (Works Progress Administration) and then, as a photographer, for the FSA (Farm Security Administration) where his work centered on rural poverty. During World War II, he contributed to the Graphic Arts Division of the Office of War Information; his insistence on realism brought the horrors of genocide in Europe to the attention of many in the US for the first time. He firmly believed that art could, and should, move public opinion for the betterment of all. “Welders” became an illustration for a popular poster from the CIO labor organization’s political action committee. It shows two welders – one black, one white – looking off into the distance, where, as reflected in the safety glasses, a structure rises – a promise for a bright future. The depiction emphasizes the importance of skilled labor in securing that future. The poster (with added text) was used for Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1944 reelection campaign as a means of engaging the support of union members. It was posted throughout the country in union halls.

Suzanne Valadon was born September 23, 1865. This 1930 painting, made when she was 65, still shows her sharp eye for color - that red rose against her sitter's pale blue dress, painted from a life spent looking rather than being looked at. #art #SuzanneValadon #ArtHistory #PostImpressionism #mei...

If you liked yesterday’s design, but also have a strong preference for cats over dogs, then I’ve got good news! Today’s new design is pretty much the same as yesterday’s, but with cats instead of pugs.

Haida Totems, Cha- atl, Queen Charlotte Island by Emily Carr, 1912, Royal BC Museum (Victoria, BC, Canada)

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #PostImpressionism

This 1912 watercolor is a luminous and historically significant documentation of the Haida village of Cha-atl (Tsaahl) on Haida Gwaii. Painted during the period when Carr was applying her newfound Post-Impressionist techniques to West Coast subjects, the work is characterized by its bright, airy atmosphere and clear coastal light. Rather than the dark forest interiors she would later become famous for, this scene features a row of weathered totem poles standing along an open, grassy shoreline.

The composition emphasizes the relationship between the monumental cedar carvings and the vast, pale sky. Carr uses a light, expressive palette of soft blues, pale ochres, and sun-washed greens to depict the weathered textures of the poles and the low-lying coastal vegetation. The brushwork is brisk and rhythmic, capturing the breezy, salt-misted air of the shoreline. This piece serves as a vital record of Haida monumental sculpture in its natural maritime setting, making it a prized selection for collectors of early Canadian Modernism and Pacific Northwest history.

Turner visited Venice three times, and by 1835 the city was already being reshaped by visitors, commerce, and memory. His painting may be less a view than a record of change. Does it feel like farewell or escape to you?
