A bolt of lightning teases its way out of a cloud above Hollywood Beach in Chicago. It's night but the darkness has been illuminated blue-white. You can see shadows of rain beneath the thunderstorm, and an empty pier in front of me.An angrier bolt of lightning slices its way down to Lake Michigan's waters as shot from Hollywood Beach in Chicago. The beach itself, at the far left, is relatively empty. A couple of people ghost toward the camera in a long exposure motion blur. The bolt of lightning has wisps of clouds in front of it, and also covering the base of the cloud it is striking from. The bottom ruffles of many other clouds are illuminated.In this composite of seven images totaling 28 seconds, a thunderstorm retreating into Lake Michigan puts down multiple bolts to the lake and bolts laterally across the sky, shining off water with a light chop in the foreground - especially to the right. The base of every wrinkle in the thunderstorm cloud overhead is illuminated.In this composite of three images totaling 12 seconds, a thunderstorm more than 30 miles away from me sends multiple bolts of lightning to Lake Michigan, illuminating all kinds of bits of cloud all around. We can also see over the top of the thunderstorm, especially at top left. That this image is a composite is betrayed by three copies of every visible star above the cloud rotating to the right.
