up. As Virgil lifted him he heard his brother gasping nearby, nearly incapacitated, and wished again he were able to spare him.

They PASSed into the tunnel and complete
darkness enfolded them. He flinched at the clang of a portcullis dropping. Torches flared, only two. The guards permitted no speech, making the muffled crashing of brick and mortar all the more frightening
as it shook the tunnel. Here and there water dripped or gushed from cracks in the walls, ceiling and floor. At a junction of connecting corridors Salde left them,
taking no torch. Rushak peered through the darkness where he had disappeared, trying to keep his bearings.

My plan at the time — punish the son to revenge the father — fizzled out almost immediately. I did become quite violently overzealous with the punishment, though, but I healed him tenderly afterward (stop laughing) and loved him passionately after that (really, please stop).
So yes, like any sad old lech, I crushed on my grandson's schoolmate. I fell hard for the son of my sworn enemy. The revenge? Forgotten in the haze of lovely days. My boy continued to spend holidays at the manor, and sweet Salazar, what a marvelous way to pass the time. He loved being there and I loved having him there.
But then it changed, you see. That's why I'm writing again.
The growing-up part I could just pooh-pooh, but he wanted to apprentice — with Garrick — at that dusty wand shop. Was Albus the Astute trying to push *all* my buttons?
Naturally I had to track the old wand-maker down and pave the way for my young paramour. I can still make Garrick quake. I just wish he hadn't been so embarrassingly forthright during his internment at the manor. Had Gabby Garrick kept quiet about the twin cores, I might still have my wand today.
It goes without saying that Narcissa's approach of Abraxas had been... unusual, surprising even. But only if you hadn't a clue about who Narcissa really was, or what she knew, and what she'd heard and overheard.
As the years passed and she and Lucius grew apart, she had Draco. When they moved to separate wings, she had Draco.
When Lucius embarked on a series of dalliances like his father, she still had Draco. She had Draco even as she took lovers of her own.
By then, the secret seemed to hold no more power over Lucius. He no longer seemed to care about family secrets. He no longer seemed to care about anything that Narcissa could see.
But no one would know because this, too, was a family secret, and family secrets
must be kept at all costs —
Unless and until the weight of those secrets were to grow too heavy for such a family to support, and threaten to destroy them from the inside.
‘I would never have expected to be a guy with a famous boyfriend. It’s hard to explain, but I’m still mentally adjusting.’

‘Please try to explain. That’s worrying me. Are you struggling?’

‘No. Not struggling. Adjusting. My self-image mostly, I think. Men like me go out with the guy from accounts, or a solicitor, architect, driving instructor. Average guys. Maybe the hot barista we see every day, but probably not because that’s a bit adventurous. Men like you go out with artists, models, other actors. Creatives.’

‘Baby, did you just describe yourself as average for a second time?’ I’d let it pass the first time, but I wasn’t having that.

‘I am Mr Average. There is nothing remarkable about me at all.’

‘If I ever hear you say that again, we’re going to have our first argument. Understand?’

‘But—’

‘No buts. You are intelligent, kind, hot as fuck, absolutely adorable, and utterly addictive. You are in no way average. My boyfriend is incredible and I am a very lucky man. Understand?’

‘Yes, Kyan.’

‘Good boy. As for dating other creative souls, yeah, that can be fun. It is exhausting when both of you are ridiculously high maintenance humans though, and I’m high maintenance enough for both of us.’

‘So you like me because I’m… not like that.’

‘Good save. I like you because you’re you. Simple as that. We need to get you back to work.’

I had to be more careful to make my feelings absolutely clear to Cole. Not only was he still aligning the last of the fantasy with the reality, but I was his first relationship. He had literally nothing to compare the way I treated him to. I was not allowing thoughts of us eventually breaking up to enter my head, but if he ever did get sick of me he would leave with the highest of standards. If there was a guy after me, he was going to need to step the fuck up and treat my Cole right, because he would know what that meant.
~An excerpt from the WIP Frogbo written by Jace Patience van Kaathoven—that's me :) (word of the day ["pass”] -> ["GO"])~

Grab the green thing: the Last Thing, the Final Thing of Verse Unial Most. Ball the metaphysical fist (this is the easy part), squishly now. But a putty-mush plucked from the proverbial pumpkin patch-that-which-paves-creation’s make. You know the one. The same place you spring forthst—nothing. Anyway, ball the Metaphist.

Hold the future as if it makes to escape.

Then, like a pineal pin-prick piercing pon a layer of aether most known-un, take all Our strength, TOBB, and give Fate a Throw.

Though I have bad news, FROG. I thought you should know:

For all intents and portents thine defines a one-way yo-yo.

Now [GO]. FALLING. Once more.

For the road.
“Feel the barrier,” I instructed. “Just like with all magic, we’re working with threads and weaves, same principles apply. You need to pull individual threads through your hands. Let them pass in and out, be very careful with that. If the magic doesn’t leave you — if you actually pull this much magic into yourself — it will kill you.”

“Heh... So, no pressure?” Liz sighed. “I… think I understand what you’re talking about. I just need to let it go through my hands, right?”

With my eyes closed and my hands on hers, I focused on sensing what she was doing. She felt around the barrier a little, then stopped. For a moment, there was nothing... Then, I could subtly sense the weave shifting, the threads slowly pulling towards her left hand, until they gently passed in, then out, of her palm.

“Okay. Now, you need to create more points of contact, where you’re letting the threads in and out. Use your fingertips, the pads of your fingers, your palms, as many points as you can.”

“That’s a tall fucking order,” she complained. “I haven’t worked with magic like this in over a hundred years…”

“You were a magitech prodigy, Liz. Have some confidence in yourself, you can do this.”

Fox raised an eyebrow. “That is quite the sales pitch, demon. I bet you’ve been working on that one for a long time, haven’t you? Did he know that you planned to betray him, when he sent you here?”
“I can’t imagine how he could.” It replied.
“Well, at least you are loyal.” She rolled her eyes.
“Our relationship never involved loyalty. We used each other, because it was mutually beneficial. He would betray me just as quickly, if it served him.”
“But our arrangement would be strictly advantageous to me, of course.”
“Of course. It is best for both of us that way.”
	“Until it isn’t.”
The demon didn’t respond to that.
“I do appreciate the offer, but I think I will pass on the possession and inevitable betrayal,” Fox said. “Thanks anyway.”
“You might want to reconsider, given that the alternative is death. You can’t fight me and win. You know that.”
“Maybe not. But then again, I don’t actually plan to fight you.”

Scowl notwithstanding, he did not carry himself like a cruel man, even after he’d committed a cruel act. She must make herself believe he wouldn’t be cruel to her, until he proved otherwise.
Courage. What does one do when facing an angry bear?
   Make yourself look bigger.
“Do you see what I’m doing?” she said, pointing at her own face. “I’m smiling. It’s how you make people think you’re happy.”
An infinitesimally brief moment passed where something like surprise flashed in his eyes, but then he lapsed back into irritation. “Why?”
“Because weddings are happy. And when they’re not happy, we pretend they are because it’s how we maintain pretenses.”
