In the old days everyone there knew the amusement won’t last. ii You arrive in the year of the ram, the rest is your journey now. Like the rest of us, you ran away once: such want in the air where I found you — our best years in the village fields. iii I used to find it barbaric, mother, in small distant cubes of light. It’s hideous to witness but but how beautifully she can dance, In my sleep Bei Dao’s voles are there and the low echo of a question.

An excerpt from Curse of Nohvan containing a simile. The priest nodded. “Yes, yes. This was where we were going with your friends.” He paused only briefly. “Do you perchance have some food with you?” The fopdoodle had nerves; I had to give him that. I still spared some of the dried meat I had and he… spat it almost right away. “This tastes like ash!” Ash… Land of the Dead… It kind of made sense to me. Because he was dead, maybe he didn’t even need food.
