As it turns out, Darius (pronounced da-RYE-us) debuted in Japan just 40 years ago this month on October 7th, 1986! I was planning on covering a song from a certain game I started recently, but I figured that could wait since I wanted to celebrate the anniversary of one of Taito's most defining series, and their very own flagship STG franchise (yes, other than Space Invaders). Darius wowed folks back then (and even now) with its early usage of an ultra widescreen display, and the game itself is quite a fun time with its weapons, its co-op multiplayer, and its ginormous robot fish bosses (though if you want to play it yourself, I HIGHLY recommend either of the Darius Cozmic Collections by M2 or M2's Mega Drive port of Darius Extra). And of course, I decided to cover the game's first BGM track Captain Neo, which was first composed by Zuntata founder Hisayoshi Ogura for the 1985 game Metal Soldier Isaac II (and its prototype Metal Soldier Isaac) before he arranged it for the more famous Darius the year after. Given that the music in the game uses 6 channels (all 3 FM channels in 2 YM2203/OPN chips), my mind went to the PC Engine at first. However, there's already a PC Engine version of the game, Darius Plus, so that nixed that idea. I was a tad stumped until I remembered that the Sega System 1 used two SN76489A chips, which each have three note channels (plus a noise channel). I've been wanting to do something with the Sega System 1's sound in Furnace for ages, mainly since I love the way Sega and Coreland used it for music back in the '80s (and of course, the games that they made for it like Super Locomotive (which technically was made for a prototype of the System 1 hardware), Flicky, Teddy Boy Blues, and the arcade versions of Choplifter and Pitfall 2). So, I figured it'd be fun to give Captain Neo a bit of an '80s Sega treatment here. It took a bit for me to figure out how I would transcribe the FM volume envelopes by ear to PSG, especially since I take the unorthod…
