I found a coneflower infected with aster yellows in the garden. I pulled the stems but can't get the roots without disturbing other plants. I'm not sure what to do about that. #nativeplants

These orchids are stunning whichever angle you look at them from. The speckled backs to the sepals are particularly beautiful 🌿🩷

A native plant nursery owner donated three books to a seed library project. The books cover cultivating prairie and meadow species, seed collection, preservation, stratification, and germination – crucial knowledge for growing over 100 species successfully. #nativeplants #seedlibrary

Thanks for this, it’s been great watching your #nativeplants through the growing season. I’m inspired to make some plans over the winter so I’ve bookmarked your thread. Desperately trying to convince Peter that less lawn is better. Let’s try a few areas like these and see how it goes lol. 🤞🏼

We did it! The final plant to share in my garden is witch hazel. This shrub / small tree blooms in the fall. It’s often the last of the #nativeplants to start and finish blooming. It should bloom by early October, with scruffy yellow flowers, usually dropping its leaves first.

And that’s all folks!

• Native range in Canada: ON, QC, NB, PE, NS
• Native habitat: woodlands, forest margins, thickets, ravines, floodplains, streambanks
• Soil: dry - moist, acidic, rich
• Light: full sun - full shade
• Height: up to 10 meters, often much shorter (under 6 meters)
• Blooms: yellow, September - November
• Ecological benefits: Attracts late season pollinators including bees.
Birds eat the fruits and seeds. Mammals eat seeds and browse foliage.
• Notes: This species often flowers after the leaves have dropped. It is often the last flowering native plant to bloom. The seed capsules project seeds up to 10 meters away.

Pale sunflowers, Helianthus decapetalus. Or at least I think that's what they are. Certainly a sunflower and one of the smaller "woodland" species. A lovely stand has developed in this drainage ditch garden. They are quite popular with bumblebees and birds relish the seeds in winter.

My New England aster is filling in! Huge difference from last year.

Ignore the brown death in the background. Just the usual herbacide-caused plant death along my neighbor's woods. Why do they do that, you ask? No clue.
