Our photograph shows the side of an old, imposing church or chapel, viewed from a low angle beneath a deep blue sky. The warm, weathered stone and rough reddish-brown exterior walls are dramatically illuminated by sunlight, while parts of the building fall into deep shadow. The most striking feature is the large arched window on the right. It is framed by pale, weathered stone and filled with an intricate white-painted lattice of small diamond-shaped panes. The delicate framework contrasts beautifully with the heavy, ancient masonry surrounding it. A second, narrower arched window appears further along the wall, also featuring white latticework. Above the roofline, several slender Gothic-style spires and pinnacles rise sharply into the sky, with the tallest tower-like structure dominating the upper left of the image. The strong sunlight creates a dramatic contrast between the bright wall, gleaming white windows and almost-black shadows along the side of the building. A tall, dark evergreen tree stands at the far left, adding further vertical emphasis. The picture captures the age, texture and Gothic character of the building, with the elegant, almost lace-like windows providing a particularly beautiful contrast to its solid, weathered stone walls. Finally, our picture today is finished with a simple white border frame.
