He was drawing into himself, Sera could tell. She wasn’t normally so good at reading people, and she much preferred the predictability of machines. Maybe that was why she could read Marcus. After all, wasn’t he a machine himself? “Tell me about your women, then.” He narrowed his eyes at her with a hint of blush in his cheeks. Distraction successful. “Why?” “People might want to know,” she replied with a grin. “People like who? Who’s going to read that report of yours?” Oops, she’d almost given the game away. Sera’s fingers tapped idly on the keyboard as she put on what she hoped was a bashful smile. “I’m curious,” she said. And then, since that was too strong a reaction, “Remember that you almost made part of your harem after Ring City. I need to know what sort of company I was going to keep if you’d gotten your hands on me.”

By this point, the Theonova’s sensors had kicked into gear. Her eyesight wasn’t brilliant over long distances, such as from the system’s edge where she was currently sitting, but Sera could still pick up a few key details to help the mission. Right now, she was most curious about the unknown craft in the centre of the little gathering. The big, plastic triangle floated like a wedge of cheese silhouetted by the blue of the star. “This is very odd,” she remarked as she worked the controls to focus the sensors on the alien cruiser. “The infrastructure of Arkay’s ship is massive, but I’m not picking up any energy readings outside of what I think is a relay suite on the underside of the main housing, and those huge engines on the back. It’s almost as if most of the ship isn’t being used. Just the command centre in the middle and some very basic engineering.” “Maybe she’s got the lights off to conserve power,” suggested Elm with a shrug. “Maybe her creepy experiments take up so much energy that she can’t afford to keep all the other decks on all the time.” “Or it could be a shell protecting the real ship underneath,” said Marcus.
