#PretendPanel

I love audiobooks!

I spend hours of my day writing and editing, so it can be really difficult to read for fun. My eyes/brain are tired of staring at words.

Audiobooks allow me to read for fun in a different format that doesn't involve looking at more words! 🥰

#PretendPanel 11. I rarely listen to audiobooks; the only times I did were at the gym. They provide good entertainment, but elsewhere, I don't have the motivation to stop and listen.

Don't get me wrong, they're great, and I'm happy they exist, they're just not for me.

I strongly support them.

First off, I’ve done far more reading with audiobooks than other forms for years due to how convenient it is for me with my long drives to teaching.

Secondly, my mom instilled in me a love for reading thru example. Recent years, she has lost her eyesight.

I support audiobooks as both a reader and writer, though I don't listen to them myself, nor do I have the money or time to make them for my own books. I simply believe that whatever gets people to read more books is a good thing, and oral storytelling is the oldest form. #PretendPanel

I went through a big audiobook phase while I was working one city over. Great for train rides, even if they occasionally put me to sleep! Witcher, Locke Lamora, Polaris, Sanderson's Skyward, Name of the Wind... Good memories!

Not anymore, now I work from home. Now I'm all manual 📖👀

There are some authors whose works I cannot manage to read, but I've enjoyed audio versions of their books. I loved listening to Alias Grace, for example.

I confess that, as I've gotten older, I find it hard to concentrate on other people's writing now -- I want to work on my own

Audiobooks? They're neat, but I rarely get time to listen to them. The last one I listened to was Eagle of the Ninth, sixteen years ago, when I worked alone on a farm all day and watched black widow spiders crawl out the weed piles. Good times.

I love the idea of audiobooks (both for accessibility and the acting aspect of them) and I would love to be able to have my books in audiobook form.

But as a reader, I cannot listen to them. I'm not a passive reader, and I can't focus enough on audiobooks to enjoy them how I want to.

I prefer them for listening to non-fiction. I generally prefer to take fiction at my own pace, but if it's an autobiography or something then I love hearing the author tell the story themselves.

I like them, #pretendpanel, but situationally. I loveloveloved listening to the Inspector Rebus books in audio because 🫠 Scottish accent 🫠. I also love taking in really hefty speculative books in audio format too:

#pretendpanel you can answer this as a reader/listener, writer, or both, but we will get more specific about audiobooks and your writing in the next question.

Thinking a bit about the voices of the characters in my books. I once saw someone say you should be able to know who's speaking without being told, and I like that goal.

#PretendPanel- I spend a lot of time imagining the Be Series as a musical & I picture Clary's voice as very similar to this! It was exciting to find this version of You'll Be In My Heart because she'd totally sing it to her boys & it was like hearing her sing it!

Catching up after a weird weekend...

Yes, I can "hear" what I'm writing most of the time, but not always in the same detail that I can "see" things. The character voices are quite distinct in my head, for a start. I can hear some of the music they play (especially covers, heh) also!

Yes. Especially when I write storms.

Usually I hear it in my own voice. This is why I used to heavily-Italicize a book. I wanted people to know where the emphasis was.

I've worked on that problem quite a bit, learning to trust the readers' instincts on where my emphasis would be.

Still have doubts here and there lol.

#PretendPanel

Yeah, I'd say I do~ Especially when the characters are talking :D It helps me with nailing down their banter and when they interrupt each other or things like that~
