Did you know honeybees sometimes make dedicated nectar runs? They don’t always carry pollen! This lady is hurrying back to the hive with a load of nectar. Sometimes they carry both, one or the other.

This cute being is Deutonura monticola and belongs to the Neanuridae family. I am hoping to get a terrium and hopefully will have some of these cuties.

Met a new assassin bug friend this weekend. I thought it was a Spined Assassin Bug. This individual was camped out on a Bur Oak leaf, however, making it much more likely that this is Acholla multispinosa.

The assassin bug is a light brown with hints of gray mixed in. The bug has six legs. The back four are thin. The front legs are much heavier and thicker as the bug uses these to clasp prey. It has a long, thin, pointed "beak" that is folded backward under the head. It uses this beak to stab and consume its prey. The bugs segmented antenna stick up and then bend forward. The bug is roughly textured.

The image is taken from slightly below the bug, looking slightly upward. The dried oak leaf it is on takes up most of the bottom third of the image. We can see the shaded underside of the leaf as well as the bright upper side the bug is sitting on where the edges curl downward. Behind the bug is out of focus, showing dark green oak leaves punctuated by lighter yellows where the sun is hitting leaves.

The bug is facing the camera, it's front legs raised in the air, bending outward, as if it is trying to appear bigger and scare the photographer.
