It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas this (Canadian) Thanksgiving across much of Alberta. A small flock of Evening Grosbeaks dropped by for the festivities this morning—a welcome flash of colour in an increasingly muted world.

Spent last weekend birding at Long Point. Still a good variety of fall warblers, with yellow-rumps being the most common.

A Curlew, facing forwards, stand in shallow water at the edge of a marsh pool. The large wading bird is mottled brown with a long, downward curving, dark coloured bill, and long, slender, dark coloured legs. The Curlew holds a large black crab with yellow legs in its bill. After much struggling the bird decided that the crab was too large and awkward to eat and dropped the crab which scuttled away to safety.
