Text excerpt from NOMARA, a science fiction WIP by L.L. Stephens. Snip shows Kate on the Terran ship, being asked by her commanding officer to do a favor: “If you’re making last minute entries, Varros, do something for me.” Rubinsky reached into his jacket and retrieved what looked like a personal datascreen. “Take this. It contains a complete and accurate file of the Orion’s ship’s crew and research personnel. Tag it into the shuttle subsets.” His order made no sense. The shuttle shared the Alameda’s databanks. “Are you concerned about some sort of datalock?” “Not officially. Just a contingency.” Kate could imagine what kind. Rubinsky wanted to look for the Orion. She’d been briefed with the landing team about the potential an unusual valley formation on the plain near where Oandah’s people lived. An anomaly picked up by hi-rez geosat could be ship gouge. She had to give the man credit: he didn’t give up. Kate took the datascreen into her hand and weighed it. Small as it was, it carried an unwelcome suggestion of subterfuge. By doing it this way, Rubinsky bypassed the Alameda’s ship intelligence and databanks—and also bypassed the possibility of alerting bureaucratic observers on ship to his use of the expedition for an unauthorized search. It would be easy enough to refuse and let Thorne replace her with someone more willing. But to what end? Kate played by the rules, but if there was even a possibility that the Orion was down there, was it so wrong to look for it? Or survivors? Concordat regulations were sometimes the worst enemies of those who upheld them.

A wail woke her up. It was hers. Her wrist burned with radiating pain. She was laying on it. Her eyes fluttered open and through sticky tears and a grey haze, she saw she was in a corridor. Yellow strips from the floor illuminated the white walls, an odd dark shadow cast across an indentation to her side. There was blood. She cried out again. “Someone, please.” But she was alone. Could she stand? Her eyes struggled to focus on anything. The pain blossomed from her head, contending with the screaming from her arm. She’d been on the Bridge, talking to the girl. Then, this. Sudden shivering took over her body. So cold. Was she dying? Distantly there was a bang and a shout. She closed her eyes again. Boots on metal. Closer and closer. Bang, bang, bang. She sobbed as she was hoisted into the air, the smell of old tobacco filled her nose, but her hand flopped uselessly down, a spike of outrageous agony and darkness closed in on her vision again

He carried a dented metal hip flask in his left hand and flexed the right one like he was preparing to use it. A younger man with blond hair trotted behind him, wringing a tweed flat cap in both hands. He was restless. Worried. Throwing looks over one shoulder, then the other. That was a bad sign. “Are you Joric?” the older one said, grinning, a false, mean grin with two holes in it. A man with missing teeth. Also a bad sign.
