It's that time of year. All sorts of action at the New England Asters (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae). Nectar and pollen sources start getting scarce this time of year, so you really get some concentration on the asters. Insects ID'd in alt text. #pollinators #insects #backyardwildlife #nativeplants

A metalic black and blue Yellow-collared Scape Moth (Cisseps fulvicollis), which has a bright orange (not yellow) fuzzy collar, feeding on a bright purple and yellow New England Aster in bright sunlight. A longhorn cuckoo bee (Triepeolus sp.) with a black face and black-and-cream striped abdomen feeding on a bright purple and yellow New England Aster in bright sunlight. Lemon Cuckoo Bumble Bee (Bombus citrinus) with a fuzzy black-and-yellow striped body feeding on a bright purple and yellow New England Aster in bright sunlight. Bicolored Striped Sweat Bee (Agapostemon virescens) darting between flowers of bright purple and yellow New England Aster in bright sunlight.

An Oak Tree a Day
A perfect example of how the mighty oak is a resister of sorts. While others stand in line, straight & broad & do what trees do, the oak branches say meh, maybe I want to go this way. You be you, don’t follow the sheeples. California #nativePlants #nature

A large old oak with a gnarled trunk that goes from silver at the lower extremities to a rich brown color supporting branches that go every which way. There is a slope in the background dotted with younger trees and numerous flags in the golden duff layer where pollinator plants have been planted. Blue sky shows through the canopy and there is a picnic bench partially showing in the foreground. A view of most of the tree showing its wide reaching branches and three picnic tables to the left.

The single New England Aster bloom the deer left me after they chomped the rest of the plant 😆 🦌

Aromatic aster is always the last to start blooming out of all our asters.
Native to the central plains from ND to TX, it’s a perennial zones 3-9 that grows 24” tall and is a late season lifeline for pollinators.

This is a weird year - sweat bees are still visiting mint and this great black wasp does not realize what season it is. At least the asters are on point (missed the leaf cutter bee visiting bloom by a millisecond) #nativepollinators #nativeplants #homegrownnationalpark #bloomscrolling

I love all the #NativePlants showing off in this incredible shade of blue this time of year and Salvia azurea is no exception.

These are Unexpected Cycnia Moths on the milkweed, and it's true that I wasn't expecting them. #nativeplants #insects #caterpillars #gardening 🌱

After 2 weeks in school my kids brought home a nasty cold and I've been sick in bed for 3 days. I managed to get outside and harvest some seeds though. 😅 🌱

My hand holding a dried echinacea head. Very spiky. I should have worn gloves. Echinacea seeds in my palm next to the dead echinacea flower head.

A lovely sunny morning here after the much needed rain. Eupatorium perfoliatum (Common Boneset), still flowering in the garden. My thoughts are with those in southern MN who've experienced flooding. ♥️

A micro image of Eupatorium perfoliatum (Common Boneset). Tiny white flower clusters on a 2-3ft. Branching plant. Loved by pollinators. Used for healing especially for broken bones.

I enjoy watching bumblebees “rob” nectar from the cardinal flowers. The tube-shaped flowers are too long for bees to reach down, so they bite holes at the base of the flowers to access the nectar. In doing so, they don’t touch any pollen and so aren’t providing pollination services. #nativeplants

A common eastern bumble bee bites a hole at the base of a crimson red cardinal flower to steal the nectar. Orange coneflowers are blurred in the background.

A busy garden work-in-progress scene. There are numerous potted plants in trays and, beyond them, some freshly planted ones in the ground. There are buckets of dug up soil, compost, and mulch as well as a wheelbarrow half full of wood chips.

Caladenia macrostylis - the Leaping Spider Orchid

With its berry-like cluster of deep purple calli in the centre of the labellum, this orchid is easy to identify.

Endemic to southwest Western Australia and quite common in the Perth Hills.

Fleischmannia incarnata

#nativeplants #ecoregion71

a small flat-topped panicle of small composite flowers which only have disk florets, no ray florets. around half a dozen flowerheads are blooming; there are additionally a handful of flowerbuds. the plant's green main stem rises from the center bottom of the photo then sprouts two opposite branches of similar thickness to the center stem. new subsidiary branches are starting to develop on all three. the flowerheads are cylindrical, lined with light green phyllaries whose tips often turn red. the corollas of the disk florets are light pink, maybe with a hint of blue. each corolla has five tiny spreading lobes and a tall style that splits in two at its tip. looking down upon a flat-topped panicle of with half a dozen blooming flowerheads as well as a few faded heads that already went to seed. most of the disk florets on these flowerheads are not yet open, which makes it easier to see those few that have opened up. each disk has light pink corolla with five spreading lobes. most are still developing their styles, but there are a few whose styles have grown well past the end of the corolla & split in two. pink slender-thoroughwort growing in a field of short grass near a treeline in a limestone cedar glade. its green stem stretchess upward an improbable height given its flimsy appearance (over knee high), leaning strongly to the left. the stem bears alternate leaves, triangular in shape with scalloped margins, set at the end of long leafstems. most of the leaves look wilted; it hasn't rained here in nearly a month and summer has been fierce. at the top of the stem there is a small, flat-topped panicle of light pink flowers.
