A great blue heron takes flight at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

In this vertical black-and-white photograph, a great blue heron fills the frame from behind as it leaps into flight, its wings extending beyond the edges of the frame. Its feet have just left the water, creating a small splash as droplets fly throughout the lower portion of the image. The heron’s feet are also reflected in the water below. Its tail feathers are spread apart, with the morning light shining through them. The background consists of pond water with very faint ripples that create a mesmerizing pattern.

A beautiful action photograph of a great blue heron in the wetland habitat so vital to its existence.

I decided to stalk hummingbirds this week.

I had been waiting in one spot for quite awhile and not had much luck so I wandered off and just happened to walk right up to this ruby throated hummingbird having a drink in perfect light.

A ruby throated humming bird in profile, wings mid flap. It's beak is nearly touching the stamen of a purple flower on the right side of the frame. Background is green with the sun lighting up the upper left corner.

Red Kite

I post a lot of Red Kites but it's because I have a lot of archive pictures of them going back 15+ years.

Welcome to #FlyDay, potentially seeing a lot more flying tomorrow at Lancaster Airport (lancasterairport.com/airshow-2026/), but for today, one of nature's amazing airframes as this bee does what it does best on some loosestrife.

#Photography #Bees #Nature #ECK

Bee on some purple loosestrife in the wetlands on the south-western end of Lake Redmond in York County, PA a week or so ago. Narrow depth of field, with most of the image heavily blurred shapes of cattails and loosestrife, bar the left third strand of loosestrife and a bee taking nectar from one of blooms

Long Tailed Tit

Description in alt.

Rob choicetoday is #Paridae as today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme; any of the Tit, Titmice and Chickadees.

A landscape orientated image of a long tailed tit on a feeder in the garden. The background is soft focused small trees, the feeder comes down from the top right and the bird is on the left side of it. They’re beautiful little birds, lovely colour and of course that fabulous tail.
